I learned a lot from reading the book of Romans in the Bible. This book was written by Paul the Apostle, intended for Christian believers in Rome and beyond. Much of the book is a back to basics version of the Bible. The book is a good account of everything to do with God and his son Jesus. A New Testament book, it was written after the coming of Jesus Christ, and Paul considers himself a humble servant of Jesus, obedient and dependant on his beloved Master. In Romans they discuss that Jesus is a descendant of King David, as was prophesized in the Old Testament.
At a time when many people believed the might was necessary for protection, but Paul will teach that Christians in any age need to be reminded that God is the only source of security and salvation. The way to salvation is described in Romans 2:23-24 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” This is also described in Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Chapter 6 in Romans describes in great detail our freedom from sins grasp. What I have learned from reading it is that God sent Jesus Christ to die for our sins so that we may have new life, new nature, and new freedom. This means that sin’s power is broken, now you share in his new life, and you are free to choose Christ as your new master. To summarize, Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.
After this Paul continues to describe how when a man becomes a follower of Christ, it is like he is beginning a new life with God at the center. This new life is a life freed from sin because of our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Even following the Ten Commandments and other sets of Christian rules will not save us without looking to Jesus Christ for total salvation. A Christian is one with the Holy Spirit living inside of him.
Chapters 9, 10, and 11 of Romans are concerning Israel’s past, present, and future. Israelites are Abraham’s children, and will one day all be saved. For now, many Jews do not follow the way of Christ, although some still do, including Paul himself who was a Jew.
Chapters 12-16 in Romans Paul begins to describe how we live with our faith everyday. Guidelines for living as redeemed people in a fallen world. We are responsible to our lord Christ to act as living sacrifices. To love, and not be overcome by evil. Romans 13:9 “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Submit yourself to the authority of God, remain God’s servant. Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgement. Make up your mind not to put a stumbling block in your brother’s way. Accept one another, then just as Christ accepted you.
