Achieving Musical Excellence for Church Musicians

It is a common scenario to hear about shortages of Christian talent. Nowadays it seems that anyone who can strum a few chords on the guitar can become a Music Director. In the Biblical times church musicians (they were called NASAH in the Bible) had rigorous training. In fact there was a twenty-nine year training period for the Levite! All Levites were musicians. From childhood, they are trained by the elders in both musical arts and the ministry of being a Levite.

All these men were under the supervision of their fathers for the music of the temple of the Lord, with cymbals, lyres and harps     for the ministry at the house of God.  Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the supervision of the king.  Along with their     relatives – all of them were trained and skilled in music for the Lord – they numbered 288. Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots for their duties.  – Chronicles 25:6-8

Being a NASAH means being a musician who lives up to God’s high standards.  For this reason a Levite was not considered fully qualified until he was thirty years old.

In application to the modern era, we learn several things:

  1. Do not underestimate or devalue your practice time.  If you can devote 2 hours practicing your secular songs, then, as a church musician, even more is expected.
  2. Don’t make excuses for your Christian behavior or your lack of ability because you’re still in training.   Once you have taken in the duty and responsibility of playing music for the church, you have to faithfully attend the practice sessions as scheduled, and fulfill the task assigned to you by your church worship group leader.  Your part is usually assigned according to your skill level. Do it to the best of your abilities.
  3. Expect nothing but the best from yourself.  Be determined.  God does not ask the impossible from us.  He deserves nothing less than excellence from us.  It can be achieved, if we will ourselves.

If your church can provide training for musicians, take advantage and make the most out of it.  Ask your music director on how to extend your personal skills in music.
