All scripture quotes from the King James Version except otherwise stated.
”.. and the servant ran to meet her, and said, let me I pray thee drink a little water of thy pitcher. And she said, drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking…” Genesis 24:17-19
What other conversation could have taken place here? Let’s see.
Servant: Please give me a little water from your jar.
Rebecca Vs 18: No my lord, are you saying you have all these camels laden with goods and all these servants about you that you can’t tell any one of them to fetch you water? Or do you think I don’t have anything else to do but to listen to provocative requests like yours?
Vs. 19: And let’s just say I want to humor you and ignore the fact that you have been sitting here all this while { I noticed you from afar} and just give you what you asked for; who in God’s name is going to fetch water for the camels you deliberately lined up by the trough? And why set them up so? Why can’t you just ask rather than seek to take advantage? Come to think of it, are you not the one that is supposed to help a maiden? Like I said, I don’t want to be provoked, have a good day.
Even now other conversations are taking place and the sadly many are on the wrong side of the expected answer. The thing goes beyond being caught on the wrong day. It has to do with one’s walk all this while even before the conversation took place. Rebekah’s life at that moment and her answer was a product of the life she had been living before that time. Verifying this is simple enough, just look at her brother who came into the scene some moments after.
“And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother’s house these things..and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. And it came to pass when he saw the earring and bracelets upon her sisters hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister saying, thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. And he said, come in, thou blessed of the Lord…” Gen.24: 28-31
We can see that what he did to Jacob in his later years was already showing in him even before Jacob came into the scene. May we live the life that will bring out the right answer; that will say the right things when we come to that point when things have been set to turn. It was her answer that turned her life into the direction set by God all this while.
But she didn’t know the import of the conversation she was about entering at that point in time before she responded the way she did. Her response was just a product of the way she had been living. God help us.
