The strongest argument for the existence of God may be the argument by design. Every painting needs a painter. It appears that the universe is very finely tuned to support life. This appears not to be by chance. It is true that there is no physical evidence we can point to and say “this is God,” however, the situation is analogous to the following scenario. Imagine you are walking through a hallway, and you see “Stu loves Mary” painted on the wall. You were not a witness to the making of this assertion, yet you are able to deduce that another person is responsible for this. We can even say that a person named “Stu” was probably the one who wrote it. We did not witness the creation of the world. Yet, by observing that each natural thing seems to have some kind of goal – for instance, an acorn becomes a tree – we can rationally say that a greater intelligent being is responsible for such order.
Similarly, it seems almost too good to be true for the world to exist as it does without an intelligent designer. If the world was any closer to the Sun, we would all burn up. If the earth was any further from the Sun, we would all freeze. It appears that a greater intelligent force is protecting the earth – keeping it from ceasing to exist.
