James Paramore said, “Commitment is a binding, but happy, response to duty. It is at once peaceful, yet compelling, for it obligates one to action. It is essential to the good life. It is doing what everyone can do.

Being truly committed to things can make all the difference.

First, & most important, we need to be committed to our Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ. To their teachings & to follow the guidelines & commandments they have set for us, & for the covenants we have made.

We need to be committed to following our prophet & other church leaders

It is also important for us all to set high standards for ourselves & commit to live by them.

Sometimes it is hard to stay committed.

Marvin J. Ashton talked about the difference between want & will. He said,

“The difference between those who are committed & those who are not, is the difference between the words want & will. For example, “I want to pay tithing, but our funds are so limited.” Or “I want to go to Sacrament Meeting, if I have time.” Or “I will go to Sacrament Meeting”

“To reap the full benefits of life, we must fill our days with commitment to worthy goals & principles. There is no other way. As these commitments lead us to action, we will find added growth & dimension which will guide us towards a productive life here on earth & open the door for eternal life with our Father in Heaven.”

As members of this Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints), at some time we will all have callings or assignments in our wards. Will we just want to do a good job, or will we do a good job?

Each quorum in the Aaronic Priesthood has a presidency. Each young man has the opportunity to have a calling in his quorum such as President, 1st or 2nd Counselor, or Secretary. Each position is very important – they need to work together & be committed to have a successful quorum.

Part of being committed is developing your talents & skills that will help you be a better leader.

In “For the Strength of Youth”, it says, “You are also responsible for developing the abilities & talents Heavenly Father has given you. You are accountable to Him for what you do with your abilities & how you spend your time. Do not idle away your time. Be willing to work hard. Choose to do many good things of your own free will.”

It really helps to have good adult leaders who are committed to helping us learn & realize the importance of our callings.

The adult leaders in our Teacher’s Quorum you can see their commitment to their callings by their enthusiasm when they teach us, do activities with us, or take us camping.

They believe what they are doing is important & it shows in the effort they put into it.

So, I think some of the main points of being committed to your calling are,

Developing your talents,

Being willing to work

Having good role models to learn from

Having enthusiasm, &

Belief in what you are doing.

Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley said, “Ours may be a small responsibility in the Church. It is good to fulfill that responsibility with diligence. & it is also good to know how that responsibility contributes to the great over all program of the growing Kingdom of God.”

I know that having callings in our Church is part of Heavenly Father’s plan to help us learn & grow.

I say this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
