Being Taught by God Through Special Needs Students: Part Four

As a religious educator of students with special needs I have come to know God more fully and how to better serve others.

Every so often you receive a response from students with special needs that shows how trusting and faithful they are to the things of God. During one of our lessons, Arlene asked the following question:

“How do I know when Jesus is speaking to me?”

First I thought what a great question from someone who is supposedly mentally disabled. I would dare say that most of us “normal” people could use the answer to such a question. I explained that Jesus’ Apostles (Paul) in the bible taught that we can know that the spirit of God is talking to us when we feel peace, joy, love (see Galatians 5:22). It was her response that made my day, she replied,

“Get out, no way!” “That’s cool!”

I could tell she was so excited because she had felt those sacred feeling before, and that God had indeed spoken to her. I thought how wonderful it would be if all of us would ask such questions, and then after receiving an answer we too could recognize God’s hand in our lives and think it was “cool”. Maybe we as a society would worry less about what others think and more about what God thinks.
