What comes to ones mind when the word blood pops up? Can one continue to live without blood; is it possible to sustain a normal life without it? One’s physical body is weakened without this essence.
In many occasions it has been requested by some blood transfusion institution to donate blood for the cause of saving lives. When looking at how many accidents occurs per day, we might at times feel the need to donate some blood, in this way we help to save some lives. If people don’t give blood, we will have more and more people dying as a result of this. So let us just say that without blood in our vessels, we will seize to live.
Eating of blood
Without even being taught, our natural instinct tells us that it is wrong to eat blood, we were never created to eat or drink, or consume blood in any way, we just know it is wrong. Not only do we know this by instinct, but we are given a principle by means of biblical scripture, Acts 15, verse 20, 29. So what can we take out of this? It is not only by natural instinct, but also by biblical principle that we should not eat / drink blood.
The verses mentioned above teaches us some principle that we should follow, but in some instances, peoples` understanding of the verse isn’t always clear. In a certain religion (belief system), this verse is being used as a basis to abstain from blood transfusion.
Blood in the bible
The word itself appears in the bible on various occasions, blood was used for the atonement of sins. Back in the old days, the blood of an animal had to flow to make right where you’ve gone wrong. What does this mean? People believe blood is something sacred, is this the case, it remains a question. In the Old Testament, sacrifices had to be made of pure animals, read Leviticus1, 2, 3, 4. The blood of a pure animal saved the Israelites when the last of the ten plaques occurred in Egypt, they had to kill a lamb (without blemish), read Exodus 12. The blood had to be painted onto their doorpost and lintels of the door, when the tenth plague came through Egypt, none of the Israelites were killed, they were identified (and saved) by the blood (of the pure lamb).
In the New Covenant, the blood of Jesus (the lamb) saved us from eternal torments in hell (which is a reality), read Luke 16. Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ paid the price for us to be redeemed from our sins.
‘Spiritual operation’
Allow me to explain this by means of spiritual operation:
We were once in such a sorry state, we experienced a condition that was terminal, our condition was so poor that we would die and spend eternity lost. The doctor diagnosed us with “severe heart condition”, He also identified a medical procedure that could save us from dying, heart transplant. During this process we will get a new heart and the donor’s blood and His blood will give us hope for the future, all we had to do is accept the it…
Now look at this from another angle; we were once in such a sinful (sorry) state, we were doomed to go to hell (terminal condition), we would spend forever in hell (eternity lost). God (the doctor) knew our state. He gave His only Son (medical procedure) to save us, to die on the cross (heart transplant). During the crucifixion, He paid the price (donor’s blood) that set us free; all we have to do is say yes for the transplant
Is blood transfusion prohibited in the bible?
Doctrines sometimes comes into existence due to erroneous interpretation of the Holy inerrant Word of God, people when they are unclear on issues could lead lots of people astray, and it could be very dangerous for both them as well as their followers. When looking at Bible verses such as Genesis 9v 4, Leviticus 3v 17, Acts 15v 20&25, does it not clearly teach against eating? Or does this also translate blood transfusion? Surely when someone receives blood by means of transfusion does not mean that he is eating the blood.
