I received a note today. A very nice note. What it said—basically—was, “You have a special gift which you can share with others. You have a purpose.”
Am I the only person receives nice notes or gets told that I have a purpose? Not likely.
Am I the only person who hears that and wishes they knew what that purpose could be? Again, not likely.
I appreciate the thoughtfulness of the note. In fact, I saved it. But it brings up an unanswered question:
What is this purpose people keep talking about?
I understand the Greater Purpose of life. I am a Christian. I’m here to be God’s companion.
What I’m talking about, I privately call the “sub-purpose” of life. The purpose within the purpose. What does God want me to do with the gifts He has given me?
This last note was given to me after I played the piano and sang at church.
So let’s say my purpose within the purpose—what God wants me to do with what He has given me—is to share music with others. Does He want me to continue doing so in church? Would He be happier if I toured in a band? Would He like for me to record? Does He want me to lead children’s worship? Or is there something else He would like for me to do, of which I am unaware?
I wish, one of these times, when I get one of those nice notes, I would get a glimpse of what direction God would like for me to go. Cliches are nice. Even inspiring, at times.
But I sure wish the cliche would tell me what I need to know!
