Demon Possession: Real or Unreal?

The Demon-possessed presence and influence seem to be on the rise in America and in the world at large. The evil that consumes the minds of our nations and the Satanic lifestyles make mockery of the twenty-first century leaders of the Church and community are now commonplace. There are places where it seems to be more pronounced than in others but the truth is, in the Western countries, especially in America, Demon possession has taken on many Medical names that masquerades rather than expose demonism.

In today’s intelligent world you can ask just about anyone if they believe in demons and if they are truthful about it they will answer no. Many who attend church or other religious services will tell you they don’t believe in Satan or demons, let alone demon possession. The problem is that we are at a time when most people subscribe only to what they can see, feel, taste, smell or hear. If they cannot, then, they cannot be persuaded that demon possession is real.  I believe the reason that many modern day preachers do not preach on sin, Satan, demonic possession and Hell is because many preachers without faith cannot comprehend the message of the Scriptures concerning such matters.

I am reminded of what I read recently about one of the greatest tricks of Satan and that is to keep people from recognizing Jesus Christ and by keeping them in Spiritual darkness. That is key to what Satan is doing in the world today. Demon possessed people are people who are drawn two ways. The self of those that are possessed will go to church, go to work, go to school, parties, work in professional environments but at the end of the day, they commit acts of violence that surprises even those who have known them for years. We call people insane when they are doing crazy unreasonable outlandish things. we call child abusers pedophiles when they sexually molest and kill children. We call racial hatred racism when they abuse others for no other reason than the color of their skin or because they are of another ethnic group. But in fact, if the truth be known, all such acts and many more stems from demon possession.

The Bible addresses all of them.

I will cite this one illustration, even though there are some others recorded in the Bible.

In the Gospel according to Mark 5:1-20 there is recorded a true story about a Demon possessed man. The LORD Jesus and His disciples had just crossed the Sea of Galilee and now he was being met by a demoniac. We notice here that this man possessed with demons was acting in a frightening manner. He was living in the tombs outside the city away from the inhabitants of that area. He inspired fear because no one was able to control him. This man had been bound with chains and fetters both on his hands and also on his feet but to no effect. This suggests how powerful demons are. Chains did not work and no one was brave or strong enough to hold him or “tame” him. He was living there in the mountains and caves, roaming night and day, crying in his misery. No doubt he was restless, tired from sleeplessness, cutting himself with tones. There was no hope for this man until Jesus Christ came along. That is when the demons were cast out and the man was cured but the point I am making is that demons are real. I am not saying that all of the ills of our society are caused by Satan and his thousands upon thousands of devils and demons who are able to possess the minds and bodies of humans. We cannot dismiss the homosexuals, lesbians, and bi-sexuals who are making a mockery of the goodness of God with their lewd and ungodly lifestyles. It is indeed demon possession on a scale that puts Sodom and Gomorrah to shame.

It is clear that we certainly cannot over look or dismiss a lot of what’s going on in this world as normal circumstances. The violence that is escalating in our churches, the gang violence and murders in our schools, the rise of murders and abuses by paedophiles, the increasing murders of whole families by one family member, and the millions of abortions that take place yearly and sanctioned by those who are sexually active but are not ready for motherhood and fatherhood, they make mockery of everything sacred and holy.

Our world stands in need of a Savior. We need Jesus but even here Satan and his demons is making mockery by using preachers, men and women, who preach prosperity messages make motivational speeches that appeal to a people who are hungry for the Gospel of Jesus Christ but are fed only what Satan wants to give them. Material possessions accompanied with his demons. Wake up, wake up O Zion!
