King Ahab sailed with Satan,
A vineyard did he see.
Won by dishonest methods,
“For, lo, it pleaseth me!”
Old Peter, being fearful,
Stood by the Devil’s fire,
Denying the Christ who bought him,
Saved from the people’s ire.
Would Judas be a traitor?
The Devil’s ship did come.
He sold the Lord for money,
At such an awful sum!
And what of Ananias?
The Devil filled his heart,
To lie unto the Spirit,
And in his ship depart.
The richest men among us
With ease their God deny!
Here comes the Devil’s sailboat.
They board as it goes by!
Adversest circumstances.
He tempts them with distrust.
They board the Devil’s sailboat,
Called, “Easy Street or Bust!”
If they be weak in knowledge,
He tempteth with low thoughts.
Low thoughts of what our God is,
And what our God is not!
If they be bold in spirit,
He tempteth to presume,
That they can ask for pleasures,
And thoughtlessly consume!
The flexible he tempteth
No penitent to be.
God cannot bless the stubborn,
Whose need they will not see!
One he refrains from tempting.
HE thinks himself to stand,
And proud in victory goeth,
On with the Devil’s band!
From power and skill of Satan,
Come all soul-killing plots.
Best not to go on riding
The Devil’s sailboat!
