Get Real

Image via Wikipedia

“Quit trying to fool people and start being sincere”.  1 Peter 2:1

A friend of mine once lamented to me, “I am sick and tired of trying to fulfill other people’s dreams and expectations. All I wanted is to be “me”. I don’t want to pretend or hide behind a mask anymore. But more than the fear of being rejected and the pain of being unloved, my worst struggle is I didn’t know who I really am.”

We all live in a messed up world where people’s opinions define who we are. We tend to wear masks that hide our broken and damaged “self” so we can look more acceptable and attractive to others.

This phony self lives emotionally distant, socially pretentious and relationally suspicious, unable to give and receive love. We struggle  with shame, self-pity, loneliness, and isolation. We feel unwanted and unworthy of anyone’s love. We depend a lot on approval, accomplishments, status, appearance and recognition in order to feel significant.

What people think and how well we perform do not define our identity. Only God can describe who we really are for He created us in His image.

The world tells us, “You  are a reject, worthless, and boring.” God tells us, “You are loved, special and interesting.” You are wonderful in the sight of God. You don’t have to live your life by what others say nor pretend to be someone you’re not. Believe in what God says about you. Then you are free to be you.

The Bible says that if you belong to Jesus you are God’s child (John 1:12), God’s temple (1 Corinthians 3:160, God’s workmanship (Ephesians 2:10), God’s property (1 Corinthians 6:20) and God’s friend (John 15:15). This means that you are significant, secure, accepted because of who you are in Christ.

I like this part; You are wonderful in the sight of God. You don’t have to live your life by what others say nor pretend to be someone you’re not. Believe in what God says about you. Then you are free to be you. Very well said.

Very well stated. It’s a hard concept sometimes; people fasten on the verses that say we are sheep, we are all sinners, we can’t save ourelves. Yet you show that God also thinks we are special, beloved, and worth dying for. Excellent write.

Excellent article. I do agree with you on how this is a messed up world that we are living in. Too many phony people in this world. Wearing masks for different people. I have always been myself, but the way society is these days that you just don’t know who to trust, you are better wearing that mask until you really find out who it is that you are dealing with. Honesty, something that is supposed to be considered good is considered a sign of weakness for a lot of people. What’s up with that? Society says: I must act and be a certain way in order to be accepted by others. That is not what God taught us. God taught us to love one another and even to forgive our enemies. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to keep our mouths shut and not say too much. People will try to ask you all kinds of indiscreet and personal questions, but when you ask them, they just shrug their shoulders and barely tell you anything about themselves. My motto: I don’t ask so you don’t ask. plain and simple. Too much jealousy, hate and competition in this world. Most would die to see you fail. Not everyone has good intentions or has your best interest at heart. When it comes to people, most people say they don’t worry or care what others say or think about them. I find that very hard to believe. All of us want to be liked and accepted for who we are. It is that fear of rejection and not being liked the way we are that causes others to wear masks and be pretentious human beings. People need to pray more and develop a closer relationship with God.

Very well written kabayan. Does that mean most of us exist in a world of make believe? Perhaps you have a point where in fact our government promises us too much but couldn’t meet them, doctor’s were committed to the hypocratic oath but many lives were taken due to the financial obligation of medication.A lot many human endeavors are involved too. Excellent eye opener.

That certainly is an inspiring article, but it is so hard to be what you really want to be when there are others to think about. There has to be a certain amount of give and take.

Wonderful message Papaleng! A message similar to this was told to my dad by his brother. My father recently accepted Jesus Christ has his savior and so did my mother. It is an answer to a prayer I have had for the past 5 years. Well done my friend:)
