Be careful not to do your “acts of righteousness” before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. –Matthew 6:1
Giving is one of the easiest and most natural things in the world for me to do. I have always received great satisfaction and pride from the honorable mentions, pats on the back or certificates to profess my generous deeds. That was until I started my walk with God. It wasn’t long before I realized that I genuinely had it all wrong. I had obtained tangible pieces of evidence that I was indeed a good person, a nurturing friend and a giving neighbor. I had missed out on the greatest gift of giving, the reward promised to me by God. A reward given to me not for announcing or professing the deed, but for actually doing it. Just digest that for a moment.
All “good deeds” should be done to confirm your loyalty to God and his people, your brothers and sisters. There is no better feeling than helping someone in need and walking away from it with the overwhelming joy that you are holding up your end of the bargain and doing it to glorify God. That alone should be motivation enough to act on those impulses to help your fellow man. Everything you do should be to honor and glorify God, not your ego.
