Yesterday, after work, I was carrying two environmentally friendly bags filled with groceries, eager to relax a bit before going to meet a girl friend for dinner later that same evening. Just as I was about to open my front door, the little girl that lives in the apartment across from mine came running out of her apartment. She had a distressed look on her face, I was immediately concerned. I opened my door and put my bags down and thought for a second, is it wise to get involved with my neighbor’s personal business? But, quickly I shrugged that thought of and went to go find the little girl.
Luckily, she had not run off to far, actually just right in front of my apartment. I could see her peeking around the corner and then I asked her if she was okay as we both started walking toward each other. She nodded her head without saying a word. Then I asked her what her name was.
“Amanda,” she said. (her name has been changed for her protection)
“What a beautiful name,” I said smiling back, “Can I have a hug?”
She nodded and gave me the sweetest angel hug possible.
Then, I looked at her again and said, “Just so you know, I’m right here for you anytime you need me, okay?”
Her eyes thanked me and silently she ran back to her apartment.
I walked back into my apartment and knew I’d just been touched by an angel. I walk by her apartment everyday and have often looked into the window with some concern. Piles of things clutter their floors; their balcony is unkempt and needs attention. I believe they even have a new baby. They only live in a small one bedroom apartment. I silently prayed everything was truly okay and then I heard my screen door open.
“Who is it?” I said and opened the door.
Amanda was standing in front of my door trying to put someone on it. Her father walked up behind her.
“What’re you doing, Amanda?” he said.
She remained silent and quickly spoke up for her.
“its okay I said, she just wanted to give me something.” Then I added, “You know if you ever need someone to babysit when you and your wife need help, please let me know I’m home a lot and I love children, I’ve done a lot of volunteer work with children as well.”
We spoke a bit more and his eyes and words thanked me.
By the way, the note my new little angel left for me said, “Thank you for meeting me, Amanda.”
Thank you for allowing me to share this unforgettably beautiful story with you all.
Take care of yourself and each other.
