I believe in God and I believe that is how we were created. The following thought process is my way of saying our creativity is nothing more than our natural bend because that is how we were made.
Are we the “sum of our parts?” I understand “data”. I know I can build on a basic piece of information with additional elements and the “whole” becomes something else. I know a knowledge pool changes and different interpretations follow; new insights are developed. I know that different fields of knowledge overlap and intertwine and become new disciplines, and, that we often call that “discovery”. I’m not so sure I understand creation.
Of course my acquaintance with the word creation was first introduced to me when “creation versus evolution” was first an issue. Both have their champions. The implication of the word create, seems to me, to imply something completely original.
I guess, more specifically, my question is “Am I confined to the extent of my experiences?” If not, “Am I confined to the extent of my experiences plus the experiences and knowledge of others with whom I come into contact with; read; watch; in other words, experience?” Can creation be equivalent to “spontaneous combustion? Or, is there, built into my genes; my “humus” if you will; information that is part of me from humanity past? Dare we say from “cosmos past”?
Are we an existential creation? Are we a Godly creation? Are we an evolutionary creation? What do these origins mean to our creative abilities?
One way or another it seems creation is our ancestry. It seems the need to move outside ourselves is a part of who we are. When we write, or paint, or sing; anytime we express ourselves, what is the make-up of that expression?
I have to believe knowledge is infinite if for no other reason that it doesn’t stay the same. Even things we know aren’t permanent. Therefore, the information we pass along can quickly be outdated yet, there is truth that somehow gets passed from generation to generation. And, it appears in some respects, we make progress. So, somehow information is transcending the body of knowledge we are exposed to; somehow new information is created sans point by point logic.
When two different people lose a child, given that they have essentially the same upbringing there are two different responses. One may commit suicide; one may write a story that changes the world. Are their individual reactions responses arrived at by the “sum of their parts” of experience or, was something new created?
I believe that there are basic tenets to creation. Generally we build to a conclusion and then add our own analysis for a new “slant”.
However, I also think creation can be deeper than that. Our origins are supernatural any way you want to look at it. I believe we bring to the creative process the same kind of mystery as well.
