I come across this implied statement “it’s not about you” in at 2 books thus far. One “It’s not about me” written by Max Lucado, the other “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren. My pastor also has mentioned this statement a few times. From an initial impression one would agree that in the grand scope of things, that yes, it’s not about me. But if it’s not about me (or you) then what is it about?
It’s not about you
I disagree with the “It’s not about you” statement in itself. Since if it’s not about you, then why would God bother sending His Son Jesus to the earth to die for you? Why would God spend all these years working on mankind, waiting for the day when He restores things the way He wants them to be, when He apparently only took 6 days to create the universe?
To say it’s not about you, is not entirely true. It is about you! You play a big picture from God’s point of view, in the grand scheme of things. He waited for the precise time before He sent His Son to pay the ultimate sacrifice for you. One day the messiah will come and sit at Jerusalem on the throne of David and reign for a thousand years where you have a play to part! It is about you!
I understand the meaning behind the “It’s not about you” statement. That we are not to live a self-centric life, me driven life. We are to live for a higher purpose! Understandable. I think most of us get that. But we must not devalue ourselves, or count ourselves of no value. Because we are very valuable.
Do Unto God as He done unto you
God demonstrated a perfect example of the Golden rule. Which is do unto others as you would have them do unto you. God demonstrated His love, and His desire, that when He gave Himself up for us. He wants us to do the same for Him. So from our point of view, it is about Him. Yes, our life should be focused on Him. And that is what the “it’s not about you” really means. That we are meant to focus our being and our lives on God and allow His glory and will to be magnified through us.
We are not to think of ourselves as “all that”, or better than others. For God has no favourites. If He died for one, then all were dead. Without Him, we are a flower fading, we are puff of smoke, we a vapour. But God with the great love he has for His creation, demonstrated His ultimate love for you and for me. We ought to pay back the favour and give ourselves to Him. To be dead to the world, and our own personal ambition, and to live for Him.
A better statement…
Perhaps a better statement would read: You are for Him, and He is for you; He gave up His life, will you give up yours?’ Of course, I am no great author. And this is just food for thought. My pastor also corrected himself and elaborated further on his opinion in the statement as well. From God’s point of view, it most definitely is about you. But from out point of view, oh let it be definitely about Him!
