John 13:13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
When most of us think of a master we automatically think of one who is adept at what he does. A man who has been painting for 30 years and has become renowned and famous is considered a master. Some examples would be Van Gogh and Da Vinci. A plumber or an electrician who has taken their training to its highest level and been working at their craft for years is also called a Master. They are the absolute best at what they do.
Master can also be looked at in a slave/master relationship. This kind of master was your owner; you were his personal property. He could do with you and use you anyway he pleased. You answered to him and him only and you obeyed and followed without question all the commands he gave you. The US and many other countries’s of the world were once slave owning nations. Even in our modern world slavery is more common then most think.
The thing is Jesus was each one of these examples. Jesus is a master at what he does. Who better to know what a man needs then the one who created him. Jesus knows us better then we even know ourselves. Just like a master Electrician knows what wires go where and what ones are crossed so Jesus knows exactly how we are wired and how we are supposed to be wired.
Jesus is also our owner. We are his Bondservants. The debt He paid on the cross with His own blood was ours! He paid for us with His very life and now we belong to Him and Him alone. Even the one who does not choose to submit to Him and accept His sacrifice and make Him the Lord of their lives still belongs to Him. The price was paid for ALL mankind. He is our Master and we are His slaves. Our lives are no longer our own. He can do with us and use us as He wishes.
Now in John 13 and throughout the New Testament Jesus refers to Himself and is referred to by many of His followers as Master. The interesting thing here is that the master they use is the Greek word for Rabbi; G1321 dē-dä’-skä-los which means a teacher, one who teaches concerning the things of God, and the duties of man.
How true this is. Jesus was a teacher. He came to teach us the proper way to the Father and what our duties were to God and to our fellow man. Everywhere Jesus went and every situation He encountered He used as an opportunity to teach the truth of the situation. In John 14:26 Jesus said “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”Jesus’ love for us was so great that He left a part of Himself behind with us to ensure we would always have a teacher to guide us through our lives here on earth. I’d say he thought that what He wants us to learn is pretty important if it meant He had to leave a piece of Himself behind to be sure we would learn it.
So what kind of student are you? Do you think you know it all? Do you think that you’ve been in Christ for so many years now that you’re too old for anymore schooling? Truth is we are never too old for schooling and we never ever know it all. No matter how much we are taught and how much we may know there is always more to learn. Allow Jesus to teach you. Allow Him to be your Master.
