Jesus is Truth

A brief examination of Jesus as Truth, as shown in the holy scriptures, inspired by Pilate’s question “What is truth?”

The world has just finished celebrating the Easter season, the highlight of which, at least in Christendom, is the: Passion, Death, Burial, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ our Lord, and Saviour of the world. (St. John 3:16-17; Titus 2:13) Many argue that Easter, has nothing to do with Christ, but rather the worship of a pagan goddess that pre-dates Christ’s incarnation. I will not lend this forum to that debate at this time. Instead, I will venture to look at Christ as He stood before Pontius Pilate, Governor of Judea, from A.D. 26-36. Initiated by an illegal arrest, Christ was on trial. (Matthew 26:47-27; St. John 18-19.) At that time Pilate asked Jesus the astounding question, “What is truth?” (St. John 18:38)

Jesus did not answer in words. Why? Because TRUTH was standing in front of him, and The Truth never needs defense. Truth always proves itself to be innocent, righteous and just. Pilate only needed to wait, and then he would not only hear but also see the answer to his question. To see is a very powerful witness. So Christ gave him the best answer, by allowing him to both hear and see Truth for himself. His wife’s dream testified to him that Jesus was a Just Man. (Matthew 27:19) Only truth is just. Then he saw all what happened to Jesus, and how Jesus’ subsequent actions proved that He was the true Son of God.

To divert a bit (I always divert): When John the Baptist sent disciples to ask Jesus if He was the Christ, Jesus told them to hang out with Him for a few days. After watching Him doing the work of God, He told them to go back and tell John the things that they had seen. So thus the old adage, “Seeing is Believing”, though it is not wise to insist on this philosophy as a rule of thumb for everything, especially when it comes to acting on the words or works of Christ, because you will miss out on the blessings, knowledge, prosperity and good success which are wrought by faith. Sometimes believers are required to act on God’s words without physically seeing anything. It is necessary and good to see that which is not yet manifested by faith. This pleases God, and when God is pleased, you cannot imagine the blessings He pours out on the believer. (Hebrews 11:6; 1Corinthians 2:9; Ephesians 3:20)

Now back to the subject at hand. Jesus declared, “I Am the Way, the Truth and the Life…” (St. John 14:6) Here He spoke the truth. His word is truth. (St. John 17:17) Earlier John wrote, “…The Word was God, … and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory … of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (St. John 1:1-18) Christ was the living embodiment of truth on the earth. Everywhere He went He did good, because He only did those things that pleased the Father; the things that His Father in heaven told Him to do. (St. John 8:26-40,42-47; 10:25-39) So everything He did was truth. Oh to be like Jesus! Living truth. Can you such a world, if everyone was to be like Him? If you have such hope hang on, because that is the eternal inheritance of the Sons of God who believe. (1John 3:2-3; Revelation 21-22)

Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob, “God is a spirit, and they that

(St. John 4:24) You must agree then, at least by faith, that all worship unto the only true God, must be done in Christ, because He alone is truth. As Jesus said, “I Am … The Truth … no man cometh unto The Father but by Me.” (St. John 14:6) Take this cue: Here is the trademark in deciphering world religions. Only one religion stands up to complete Truth, because there is only one true God. He has one eternal home for all true believers. There is only one way to get there, through Jesus Christ, who died on Calvary and shed His pure blood to save sinners. (I know. I was born a sinner. Now I am in Christ.) That is why I am glad that Pontius Pilate the Governor did not release Him. No man took His life from Him. He came to lay it down to save sinners, and He was successful. (St. John 10:17-18) Now there is no record if Pilate went on to accept Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour. That is what he should have done, and that is what you are required to do today. Now is the acceptable time, harden not your heart.

So what is the true and right answer to Pilate’s question? Jesus Christ! If Pilate had better sense at the time, he would have phrased his question like this, “Are YOU Truth?” He would have gotten his answer right away, because Jesus came to bear witness unto the

truth. (St. John 18:37) Readers, I invite you (let that be urged and compel) to get to know Jesus. If you know the Truth, He will set you free. (St. John 8:32) He is the

(only) Way of Life and Truth. You’ll be glad for time and eternity that you did.

The angel that appeared to Joseph, Mary’s husband, the woman chosen by God to manifest truth by conception in her womb, and the subsequent birth, said, “Call His Name JESUS, for He shall save His people from their sins”. (Matthew 1:21) You go ahead; call TRUTH by His Name – JESUS! At Christmas, as the world call the season, many celebrate Christ’s birth. As with Easter, many argue that December 25th has nothing to do with the actual time of Christ birth. They say that that date celebrates a pagan god that also pre-dates Christ on earth. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your viewpoint, much people only remember Christ on these public holidays. Thank God then for these public days. However, Christ is to be revered and worshiped each and every moment of all our days. He is God incarnated in the flesh and is worthy of all that we are. Now that is the truth.

Pontius Pilate knew that Christ was innocent without fault. Yet because of fear of the people and the Roman Emperor, Caesar, he “washed his hands” and turned Christ over to the multitude to be crucified. That was what Pilate did. Today Christ stands before you. He is still the spotless Lamb of God, pure and innocent. His only blame is that He loves you enough to substitute His life so that you do not have to die and perish in eternal damnation. So what will you do with this Man called Christ? What is your verdict? Today is the acceptable day. Do not harden your heart. It is pointless to be afraid of consequences from man, and not fear God, because man can only kill your body, but God will banished both body and soul in eternal hell. You don’t believe this? That is a grave mistake on your part. Accept Jesus Christ, as your own personal Saviour, and begin to enjoy life in Truth.
