Patomos is a rocky island that sits in the Algerian Sea. The north winds are steady and the sun shines down on the island for over three thousand hours every year. The island is 158 miles from the main land. Ins spite of John’s age he was passionate about his faith and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Perhaps taking a look at the relationshio John had with Jesus will provide insight .

John was the younger brother of James. Together James and John were known as the sons of thunder. John out lived Jesus by 70 years! He was the disciple mentioned at the foot of the cross. It was John who was asked by Jesus to care for Mary, Jesus’ mother. Jeus spoke these words to John from the cross,”Son behold your mother. Mother behold your son.”

John took Mary and historians agree that they eventually settled in Ephesus where Mary later died. Besides caring for and living with Jesus’ mother John shared many special moments with Jesus. John is the only author of the gospels who refer to Jesus as the lamb of God.

Peter and John were the ones who went ahead and prepared the passover meal which became known as the last supper. Later John, along with his brother James and Peter witnessed Jesus on the mount of transfiguration. John had a strong teaching ministry prior to his time at Patmos. However it was his sentence to Patmos that produced the final book of the Bible Revelation.
