Initially, I had thought that faking testimonies regarding miracle healing was an act of drama practiced by mostly Ugandan based Pentecostal Churches, because a few Pastors in my city of Kampala have several times got away with fake miracle healing testimonies from questionable members of the congregation who are paid to give powerful testimonies about their miraculous healing.
One Pastor was nabbed 6 years ago at Entebbe Airport with electrical gadgets meant to shock people to the ground as the Pastor lays his hands on them. As they fall down from the electric shocks, these bogus Pastors convince their faithful congregations that they are indeed, miracle workers and this tends to attract more worshippers and along with this comes more money to the Church.
In Kenya, a prostitute who plies her trade in the City of Nairobi recently shocked the world when she confessed to faking a testimony at the Fire Ministries, a popular Church located within the Suburbs of Nairobi city. According to the sex worker, the Pastor sent his link-men late in the night to the street corners where she does her sex trade and asked her to avail her self for a Sunday service with an ailment that the Pastor would then pray about. He promised her 2000 Kenya Shillings cash if only she was willing to fake a miracle testimony after the Pastor had prayed for her.
2000 Kenya shillings was indeed an attractive deal for any Prostitute and so she was prompt in Church, mouth covered with cloth and when she opened the the wrap around the mouth, it revealed a twisted mouth that looked extremely swollen and painful. It was in the plan that she appears in church with a twisted mouth disease, even though her mouth was quite perfect and normal. She was pinpointed and brought forward before the congregation and asked to narrate how her mouth-twisting disease started. The Pastor then walked over and laid his hands on her and said a long and soulful prayer. When he was done with the prayers, the woman started jubilating and jumping about with joy that she had indeed been healed.
This woman was forced to reveal these dark secrets of the Pastor of the Fire Ministries to the journalists because she was not paid her full dues as promised and she wanted to cause a scandal for the Pastor. By all accounts, she did cause serious embarrassments to the Pastor and his Church because TV stations as far as Uganda were airing this spiritual fraud to the public about this particular Pastor.
Some Pastors appear more keen about making money in their Churches than saving the souls, a trend which unfortunately is seriously under-minding the Christian faith in my part of the world.
