If one is observant, they will note that many young plants will turn their leaves toward light. Below, you can see from the two photographs how some of our plants responded last spring when placed on a window sill.

The plants shown above aimed themselves to the light in order to process nutrients that would help them to grow. This speaks to me that while it is good we ground ourselves in the Word of God, it is also needful for us to maintain a direct link to God in Christ through the Holy Spirit. In other words, we are to establish and maintain a personal relationship with God through Christ.
There will be times we falter in that relationship. However, we should have the attitude Micah has in the Holy Spirit (Mic 7:9), “I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.” Certainly we need to feel that darkness has come between us and God when we sin, but after we earnestly follow the directive of 1 John 1:9, we need to set our heart upon Him again, Who is our Light.
Christ often used examples from nature to teach a point. In thinking of our plants, I was reminded of Christ encouraging the multitude (including us) to fully trust God, putting our spiritual nature above the physical so we worship and serve Him and not worry and fret over our basic needs (Matthew 6:19-32). In summary He said, Matthew 6:33-34, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
Satan and the world would like for anyone to be distracted from coming to and following Christ, just as Peter was distracted by the wind and waves as he walked on the water to Christ (Matthew 14:22-33). We must keep in mind we must endeavor to walk with God, for “…in thy light shall we see light.”–Psalm 36:9.
For those who have not surrendered to Christ, I encourage you to commit to Him Who is (John 8:12) “…the light of the world.” Until one does surrender to Christ, the Word declares that they are walking in darkness, a walk with many perils and, unless one turns to The Light, leads to eternal darkness.
