Let your conversation be as it becometh the Gospel.
Philippians 1:27 ¶Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Christians would do well to understand the real meaning of the word Conversation used here and almost every other placed in the bible, has much more to do with living life on a daily bases than the words we choose out of our mouths during the course of the day. So many well meaning saints of God feel that the biblical word conversation has only to do with verbiage.. At the very least our words need to match our life style.
A person I recently came acquainted with ended almost every conversation with “God Bless”. And if you were to ask him he would say he was a Christian and be more than happy to tell tell you so. In between the cigarettes and loosing his temper and cussing, that is. I contend that he would have been better off to never have said “God Bless” than to say “God Bless” and defame Christ afterword by a lifestyle ungodly behaviors. Similarly I recently met a woman in the checkout counter at a Wall Mart she was really really animated over the Christ and being christian. So much so: that she was waving her hands in the air and saying praise the Lord over and over again. Finally when I was done with my purchase I asked where she attended church. “ Oh I don’t attend any church, I just praise the lord in my living room”. When I heard that My heart sunk. I thought if you had some Godly instruction you may not be so obnoxious. Any good pastor would be able to teach you how to actually give Glory to God, instead of giving all the actual Christians an undeserved reputation as being loud and offensive.
It helps to understand that accepting Christ and being born again is not an event that effects only one part of our life the real rebirth experience will effect every single aspect of our lives. Jesus will not rip out just the individual pages of our lives that he deems incompatible. He completely re-writes the book of our lives, from the the beginning! It is a new creature he is working with. Every single aspect of our lives is re-written. Glory to the Lord! Therefore every aspect of our lives needs to reflect that overwhelming overhaul! The changes are not contrived they are natural and consistent. They become more and more into focus as we grow as Christians.
Jesus warned of these type of people, Matthew 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
If you understand the word Conversation as it is meant to be understood. It involves the entire life, not just the words we speak. Words are just a window to what is in our heart. They are a reflection of that which is within. Do not deceive yourself into thinking that ending your sentences with “God Bless” or inserting “Halleluiah” or “Praise the Lord” in the middle of every other statement will ever masquerade that which hides within. At least not for very long.
2 Corinthians 3:2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
Our life in Christ is by designed to preview the life and times of Jesus in us. As we live God allows such life experiences to come upon us, such as to allow us to demonstrate his word in our life. Of course if we do not avail ourselves to learn of him to become acquainted with all his ways through practice, the practice of his Holy Word we will fail Him. We need to attend a bible believing church and allow a Godly pastor to teach us the ways of this new life. Mostly we need to pray and seek God with our whole heart. Asking him to complete his work in us with and through the power of the Holy Ghost.
