Amazingly enough, crucifixion is still happening around the world, on a voluntary basis. Read on for details.

Every year, around Easter time, or Good Friday, several groups around the world practice non-lethal crucifixions.  In the Philippines, and in small Mexico towns, crucifixion is not something of the past.  It is part of a real and present ceremony held each year.

In both parts of the world, it is being done as an extreme act of penance, and as a way to give thanks to God for answered prayers, on the part of Roman Catholic believers in these regions.

Like Jesus, they don a crown of thorns, and are literally nailed to a cross.  They are taken  by others dressed as centurions, and are dragged through the streets to their crosses.  Seven inch nails are driven through their hands and feet, and thorns are placed on their heads.  It is an extremely painful experience, and one in which they do not undertake lightly.

The time spent on the cross is not long – usually only about 5 minutes, but the experience one that stays with them for a lifetime.

Personally, I accept the gift of Jesus having done that for me.  I do not feel the need to experience it myself, because I know that Jesus did it so that I wouldn’t have to.
