Nails for The Innocent

I try to make it a habit to look by and near my tires when I park our car. A few weeks ago, I parked our car across from the public library where I had to do some business. When I got out, I looked near one of the tires and found a nail. While that might happen from time to time, I think it was significant in regard to where I parked our car.

Where I parked the car was along the street on where the Circuit Court is. Jurors, witnesses and others park there when court is in session. There was no construction in progress in the area. So I had to wonder if that nail was placed there on a previous day by a disgruntled person who perhaps wanted to get back at jurors or witnesses. Was it placed there for someone just doing there duty and thus really innocent?

Immediately I had to think of what the innocent Christ got at Golgotha–nails for His precious hands and feet. Nails were to hold Him to a cross* but really could not hold Him to a cross, for He stayed there for us out of love. He surely could have been freed, but out of love He remained fastened, bound, so that we might be made free.

Christ’s death upon the cross was far more than an example. It was the culmination of a Life of meekness and obedience. In a sense, the cross is a spiritual reality where a sinner can be set free from sin and become a disciple that daily crucifies himself. By daily surrendering to Christ one dies to self and by faith walks in the Life of Christ. Every righteous act that Christ has done resides in each one truly dedicated to Him. We read what the Word says about His Life and the principles He established, and by faith through His strength we act upon them. The grace of God enables us to do this through the complete and finished work of Christ.

As Christ as the Son obeyed the Father, our surrender to Christ means our life is crucified with Him and we are made the sons of God. Just as the Son obeyed, so can the sons obey.

The innocent Christ, meekly bound to the cross by nails, set free those who were once bound to sin, if they take that cross unto themselves. While I live in a Nation that proclaims liberty and justice for all, most are without true liberty because they have not brought their sins and themselves to Christ for justice.

Regardless from what nation you are reading this article from, I encourage you to surrender to Him, Who was bound to a cross, that you may live in the true liberty that He offers, for it is written (John 8:36), “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

Notes:

* = I realize the Greek word may be translated as “cross” or “stake,” but currently my research does point to a cross. Either way, Christ died for our sins and rose again that we may have newness of life through Him and Eternal Life.

The sacrifice of Christ is incomparable. Amazing grace for human beings.

Good illustration. I like devotionals that start off with stories. Nails meant to pierce a tire are not quite the same as the nails that Jesus took for us, but it is an interesting story.

A beautiful devotional that starts with a story. Just about 15 minutes ago my son and I were talking about how effectively Christ used stories to explain the kingdom of God. When our hearts are in Christ, even something as simple as a nail in a tire, can cause us to think of and preach the saving grace of the cross.
