“Negative Impact of Missionaries Activities in Africa”
1. RACIAL FEELINGS
A racial feeling within the church is very glaring and evidence through the reorganization within the mission in 1890. The blacks were replaced with the white in all area of work within the mission and Bishop Ajayi Crowther was made to resign. This further created a tense relationship within the church.
2. CONFUSION OF VALUES
The missionaries preached revolutionary, social ethic alongside new religion. Africans were made to know that life was separated into spiritual and secular. The missionaries preached their culture and belief to the detriment of Africa values and culture.
In Africa belief, individualism is not encouraged. This was against the missionaries’ belief and teachings. Hence, the missionaries’ activities in Africa had disrupted the foundation of African society.
3. UNDERMINING AFRICA
The activities of in Africa foster the division not based on tribe but Faith. The division among the protestant, catholic and Africa churches.
4. COLONIZATION OF AFRICA
The missionaries came not only for evangelism but pave way for economic activities which later resulted to colonization of Africa which started in 1885.
The missionaries lured the Traditional chiefs into signing treaties which eventually led to the lost of their sovereignty.
The Yoruba speaking people of Nigeria was not an exemption of this fact.
It is on this fact that made the Africa critics accused missionaries as agent of imperialism.
5. NARROW EDUCATION
The Missionaries considered Education to be fundamental to the propagation of their religion. Schools were built around the mission houses.
The missionaries only provided education that was focus on reading, writing and Arithmetic. They didn’t include technological skills which were important in national development and social engineering. The type of Education provided by the missionaries was met to met the immediate church needs.
