Preacher, Where is Your Theology?

This is a wake-up call to preachers, messengers of God and their congregations. In the light of the cross let us cross-examine ourselves.

It is an awesome responsibility to be a messenger of God, moreso if you are a pastor. “Pastor” is the Spanish way to say “shepherd” and shepherds have to take care of the flock. Spiritually, they have to feed them, find water for them, guide them with their rod to green pastures and protect them from harm and danger. (See Psa. 23). Often today’s preachers believe that they know better than God concerning what the sheep need. They have found new food (new doctrines or empty nothings), protect the sheep from what is good for them (a knowledge of salvation and the Word) and many even lie in the green grass that is meant for the sheep. Let me state that there are many preachers that  strive to obey their calling but too many are falling short.

So, for the benefit of today’s preachers, let me ask the pertinent question, while we all pray for them and help them:

Preacher Where Is Your Theology?

(1)   Preacher, where is your theology

All I hear is sociology, [Mark 7:7]

Mixed with a lot of psychology, [1 Tim. 6:20]

Backed up by musicology.

Prove God with archeology,

Preach the cross not your ideology. [John 12:32]

(2)   You talk aloud for the neighbors,

But they’re hearing only newspapers,

What happened in the land,

No news about the Son of Man.

You preach about how to get some money, [Titus 1:7,11]

Nothing about Gethsemane. [Matt. 26:36-75]

(3)   You talk about how to get ahead in life,

Nothing about what causes strife.

You talk about the bling, bling,

And not about the King, King.

You mainly talk about success,

And giving money so God will bless. [1 Peter 5:2]

(4)   Preacher, I like to have paper and pen, [Isa. 30:8]

To note the points preachers make and then,

Put them into practice, [Luke 6:46; James 1:22-25]

But let me bring to your notice, [Eze. 3:20]

I know in your art you have been drilled,

But I don’t come away filled. [Luke 20:10]

(5)   Preacher, where is your doctrine? [2 Tim. 3:16; John 7:17; John 7:16; Mark 7:7]

You never speak against sin? [Isa. 30:10]

You have to be responsible.

You have to preach from the Bible. [Matt. 15:9; Mark 7:7]

You talk a lot about Shakespeare and Obama of late,

But they’re not in charge of Heaven’s gate.

(6)   Preacher you use fancy words and have people in awe,

But preacher, what about the plain truth about God’s Law? [Matt. 5:19; Hab. 2:2]

You prance around until you’re wet, [1 Tim. 4:8; Eze. 44:18]

But you don’t talk about what caused Jesus’ death. [Rom. 5:12; Heb. 9:22; John 3:16]

You say a lot about grace – God’s unmerited favor, [Rom. 6:23]

But when it comes to why it’s needed you waver. [Heb. 9:22]

(7)   In the Bible, no other definition I saw,

Except that sin is the transgression of the Law. [1 John 3:4]

Because of that we need grace, [Eph. 2;8; Lev. 17:11]

That’s why Jesus died in the first place.

If the Law is not important then neither is grace,

Can’t have one without the other so make an about-face.

(8)   Don’t just preach what others want to hear, [2 Tim. 4:3,4]

As if they have an itching ear,

Don’t be afraid to knock hypocrisy,

Just because it will cause controversy. [Eze. 2:3-5; Isa. 30:10]

Preach the pure word of God, [Prov. 30:5]

You have a mandate from the Lord.

The preacher needs to be able to feed his flock, and our food is the word of God.

True. But I fear many preachers do not know the Bible. I guess they they think they do not need to if they are not going to preach from it.

I have come to believe anyone can find anything they care to in the Bible. And they can show you the scripture to prove it.
