There are many texts that confuse children and Sunday School teachers. What if they hear Matthew 5:48 one Sunday “..Be perfect therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (NIV) and the next Sunday that we are all sinners and nobody is perfect? There are many examples. If God is everywhere is He within the devil, or to put it differently, does He permeate the devil? These are all things the child may think about. Will the Sunday School teacher have a response? At present I am composing gospel songs that introduce such topics for discussion. However, let me digress a little:As I have been played drums at the parents and childrens service at St Johns Methodist in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, I have seen how they learn new songs – sometimes very quickly. Anyhow I decided to compose a song with quite a lot of repetition so that is easy to learn. In the words I brought up the concept of hating what is bad and hating a person and where separation of the two comes in. If anyone wants to use this song for the children at a church they are welcome to. The song is called “The weeds and wheat” and the tune may be downloaded from http://swayseekergospel.blogspot.com/ I am hoping to compose more songs, perhaps in collaboration with the music worship team that I played with. As a composer I call myself Swayseeker.
A reference related to the song is Matthew 13:24 and of course there will be references for chaff, and so on that Sunday school teachers might use.
In the Chorus I say that “Not all our thoughts are entirely bad” although Romans 7:18 says: “I know nothing good lives in me..” and this could give rise to discussion of the good, the sanctified, the tainted in us and so on.Many people later in life feel that Bible issues were glossed over and they do not want to return to church. The aspect of apparently contradictory texts is one that should be discussed. In my opinion some texts are contradictory in the literal sense. In Jewish writings there was the aspect of interpretation and finding hidden meaning and it might be found that the interpretation has a meaning opposite to the literal meaning. With all this in mind it seems that is will be useful to introduce more songs that give suggestions for discussion. The Weeds and Wheat has an mp3 backing track with the melody in so that one does not need a band to perform the song. The file is small and it can be downloaded quickly. With an mp3 player and the words of the song handed out to children one can get going. The songs I intend to compose would also be suitable for adults, as is “The Weeds and Wheat” and will have backing tracks with the melody in. Religious Debate for Young People
At Sunday School young people are often given readings of the Bible that might cause confusion. The introduction of gospel songs that suggest topics for the teacher to discuss is discussed.
