Lent is the forty-day-long liturgical season of fasting, abstinence and prayer before Easter. The forty days signify the time Jesus spent in the dessert without eating and drinking. During this forty day long period Jesus as per the scriptures was said to have been tempted thrice by the Satan. However he was resilient and avoided falling prey to any of the devils temptations. This resilience was due to the strong faith he had in his father the Lord above and this is the most important thing that one needs to learn from the Holy teacher. All we need to survive is faith in God and we can overcome any hardships that come our way.
The season of lent is thus meant for prayer and is a time for preparation for the special day of Easter when Jesus rises from the dead to give hope to his apostles and signify his divine nature.
This period of lent begins with Ash Wednesday. On this day Christians go to church to pray and listen to the word of god. The celebrant of the mass applies a cross on the forehead of all those present at this event. The purpose of this practice is to remind one and all that we all come from dust and to dust we shall return.
Lent being a season of penance and almsgiving, is observed with people abstaining themselves from foods, festivities and any vices that they might have. Christians are expected to fast during these forty days. In today’s time however, the practice of fasting isn’t as rigorous as it used to be in ancient times. Now this practice is much relaxed. With avoidance of meats and spirits still followed, the severity of fasting does vary. Some people do follow a strict fasting routine wherein they avoid eating anything throughout the day. But there are some who indulge in subtle ways of fasting by sacrificing only one meal a day during the period of lent. It is customary however to fast on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday mark the end of this season. Maundy Thursday being the day Jesus broke bread with all his twelve apostles for the last time and hinted of one of his own, Judas to betray him. After this dinner the Jews captured Jesus and he was then executed on Good Friday.
The biggest miracles of all occurred on Easter Sunday when the apostles went to Jesus’ tomb only to find it empty. The linen in which Jesus’ body was embalmed was lying strewn around the tomb. It was on Easter Sunday that Jesus has risen from the dead and appeared to his apostles once again. Jesus rising from the dead is one of the most vital and happy days for Christians the world over and thus Easter is supposed to be celebrated with full joy and happiness because the son of god has arisen to free us of our sins.
