Nativity scenes originated back in the 1100’s and were started by St. Francis. Originally they had people dressed up and play the parts. It was a big honor to receive the role of Mary or Jesus for your towns’ nativity. By the 1600’s the nativity scenes started to spread to Germany.
In Germany they started carving the characters out of wood or making them out of straw and displaying them in front of churches and temples. When the town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was settled in 1741 the tradition was brought here to the United States.
A traditional set includes Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, a manger, the three wise men with their gifts, and a few animals for the stable. The scene is set up at the beginning of advent, but it’s set up without Jesus, and the three wise men. On Christmas you put baby Jesus into the manger to signify his birth, and then on January 6th you put the three wise men in front of it to signify their coming to Jesus.
Florida Retirement Home
This nativity scene is placed in front of a retirement home in Florida. The only identifiable people in this set are Mary and Jesus. These are not real people, but figures, with lights supposedly representing halos over their heads.
S’mores Nativity Set
For only sixteen dollars you can pick up a s’mores nativity set complete with baby Jesus as a marshmallow. The only thing that is correct about this one would be the colors we relate to Mary and Joseph. A blue head cover for Mary, and green head cover with a staff for Joseph.
Veggie Tales Nativity Set
The Veggie Tales television show has come out with a nativity set. The Veggie Tales is a show for very young kids that usually will portray some sort of the bible story such as those of Moses and the Israelites. For only twenty dollars you can get yourself one of these sets complete with Jesus as a vegetable.
A rubber ducky nativity scene maybe the oddest one I’ve seen. It includes Mary, Jesus, Joseph sporting a mullet, the three wise men with their gifts of riches, and a lamb duck. These do not come with a stable.
