Historically Abortion was illegal. Then, in 1973, on January 22nd, there was a Supreme Court decision called “Roe vs. Wade” that legalized abortion for any reason in the first trimester and for reasons of health later. (1)
In writing this essay I have to allow my own strong feelings against abortion to be part of my answer and additionally, my experience as a writer.
Having written several articles that are “anti-abortion” I find that comments made by readers are not interested in fact rather, convenience for their respective view.
For example there no longer can be an argument about whether a baby is alive in the womb. Today 3-D sonograms reveal details of life that could only have been imagined decades ago when Roe vs. Wade was passed. Over time the arguments of pro abortionists have changed from the stance that there is no pre-birth existence to a woman should have control over her body.
However, as we dig into our laws further, we find that we, as a country can’t even remain consistent in this area. To kill a baby under the guise of abortion is legal yet, if a person murders a woman and as a result a baby in the womb is killed as well, they are tried for two murders.
Sadly when we really examine the issue of abortion we find it is something that flies in the face of Christianity: How so?
Forget for a moment the defense that our Bible refers to John the Baptist leaping in the womb as well as David saying that he was a sinner from time of conception. If we spent no time considering the specific morality issues of killing a baby, we would still observe abortion is encouraged for mercy killing, for the choice of gender, and, sex outside of marriage, in other words it all encourages a lifestyle against God.
Another argument that those who are for abortion make is that women who are raped shouldn’t have to have the baby.
I have linked to a treatise which is stereotypical of Christian positions about rape and birth. (2)
I do not like it. I believe the argument about giving birth to a baby as result of a rape is not necessarily the position a person must take. I intend to do further research for this perhaps in a later more advanced article, but I believe there is Biblical support for the termination of a pregnancy as a result of rape.
I believe it relates to the sin of the father being visited on his offspring. If you stop and think about it, while the child would be terminated in the world, they would be taken to Heaven under Christ’s Blood. Also, consider all aspects of the pregnancy as to why there should be Christian pro-creation.
However, I will be the first to say this logic comes out of the book of “Second Opinions,” and, it certainly at this point is just my thoughts.
Abortion is an issue that will never obtain consensus and I expect as we move towards the last days it will only get worse. In fact, I read today that (Obama was inaugurated today) our new president’s first actions will be to revoke the denial of funds to those organizations that practice abortion such as Planned Parenthood and also to revoke the limitations on Stem Cell Research.
My feeling is that while the Christian should be aware of issues such as Abortion, they should shy away from debating them because it cheapens their message.
As Dr. J. Vernon McGee says in his “Thru the Bible” Broadcast (3), the Christian’s job is to make people aware of the Lion of Judah and the “Lion can take care of Himself.”
