I wish that I could speak the way Les Brown speaks. He has power and authority while speaking and looks as though he is not nervous at all while talking to thousands of people. Les is a motivational speaker that has won the Council of Peers Award of Excellence from the National Speakers Association in 1987, and has also been recognized by Toastmasters international that he is one of the world’s top five speakers. The speech we heard from Les Brown was called “It’s Possible”. Mr. Brown’s content was very strong and well put together. His delivery was excellent. Finally in Les Brown’s speech I could see a Christian perspective that can show me how to become a better Christian.

  The content in Les Brown’s speech was exciting and well organized. The first direction that he told his audience was to say “It’s Possible” every morning. The reason he said “it’s possible” instead of “I can do it” is if you say that “I can do it” then that will lead you to believe that you don’t have to work at anything to do it. But by saying “it’s possible” there is a chance that you can do it. Les Brown gives an example of this by saying that before 1954 it was believed that man could not break the four minute mile. Since then over 20,000 people have done it. When the first person to break that barrier ran a mile in under four minutes many other people thought that since this guy did it, it is also possible that I can do it and that is why so many people have ran the four minute mile. Mr. Brown also said that you can make your dream a reality. He did this when he lost his job and needed to find work. He kept on working on his dream and finally became a motivational speaker.

     Les Brown’s delivery was excellent and well prepared and practiced. He first comes out with a stack of papers in his hands but he puts them on the table and never looks at them for his entire speech. Memorizing something is very hard to do and Les Brown has memorized his whole speech and never looks as if he has forgotten what he has to say. He also speaks with great enthusiasm and confidence like he likes being in front of people and talking. Being funny was also something that he was good at and had many stories that were funny like the story he told of him being tackled hard by the massive football player and then how he thought football was not worth the pain. He used hand motions and moved around the stage which helped keep the crowds attention.

 There were a few places in Mr. Brown’s speech that had a hint of Christian values. For example he said that to get through hard times you have to have faith. As Christians we should also have faith during hard times and trust that God will be with us and take care of us during those times.  God’s wisdom in the book of Proverbs encourages us to this kind of faith rather than living by our own wisdom.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart

and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways acknowledge him,

Les Brown is a very good speaker and can teach us a lot about how to speak and keep the audience excited. He can also teach us about our Christian walk with the things that he taught us about faith and believing in yourself.
