A very terrifying story is narrated in the holy scripture in second Samuel chapters eleven and twelve thereof. The story concerns the Hebrew king David, the descendant of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the forebears of Jesus the Christ. King David was a chosen king, a child of God, an elect. The bible says God so loved him that He blessed him and delivered all his enemies into his hand for punishment. As for material wealth including women, he had them in abundance. As a king in ancient times, his words were the laws of the land. He had the power of life and death over his subjects. King David was feared and respected by his friends and foes alike. So it was after he had beheld a woman, Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah bathing, he desired for her, sent for her and committed adultery with her. Not only that. He put her into family way and to cover up the crime, he commanded his army captain, Joab, to send the private soldier Uriah to the battle front and be killed. His mission accomplished. Uriah killed and Uriah’s wife bore him a son. As far as king David was concerned, the matter was considered closed. But not so with God. After a spell of time covering not more than eighteen months, God sent his servant, prophet Nathan to pronounce judgment: ” now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house. I will rise up evil against thee out of thine house. I will take thy wives before thine eyes and give them unto thy neighbor and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. For thou did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun. The pronouncement by the prophet Nathan came to pass including the death of the king’s baby born of Bathsheba. The above narrative shows vividly how divine justice works among men, be they Christians or non-Christians.
Man is powerless against the course of justice. And the course of justice admits no exception. Justice does not pardon the prudent and cannot favor the nobles. To maintain the perfection of justice, Lucifer was dethroned in Heaven. Assuming that God did not send prophet Nathan to David before the punishment came, the world would not know the causes of the king’s misfortunes. King David would have been pitied. Enemies and evil people would have been blamed for king David‘s misfortunes. The laws of God were not given to rob man of true freedom; no, they were given to ensure freedom, happiness and peace. For the Bible says in psalm 19:8 that “the commandments of the lord are pure, enlightening the eyes.”
