The day I saw my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ could have not come at a better time in my life when I needed him the most. It was on a night when my oldest child Jessica was on life support.

I met Jeanette on September 12, 1990 as a young Lance Corporal in the Marine Corp stationed at Marine Corp Air Station El Toro, California.  We were at the enlisted club when she spotted me with a couple of my female friends who happened to excuse themselves to the restroom. She said hello and asked me who those ladies that were with me are. I told her that they were just good friends that I party with and no more. I could tell that she was bent on giving me a hard time, but I was determined to win her over with kindness and I had every intention to get her number before I left. It was close to closing time and after chatting with her for about an hour I asked her for her number and she gave it to me. The very next morning, I called her right away and she was quite surprised. We dated for about a month and a half and Jeanette became pregnant with Jessica. We got married in Las Vegas on January 12, 1991.

This is Jessica and the photo is the property of the author.

Jessica was born July 2, 1991 at 8:25 am. She was so precious. She weight in at 7 pounds eleven ounces. Her birth was normal and we were so happy to finally bring her home. Two weeks later, I was at work and I got a frantic call from Jeanette telling me that Jessica is lethargic and I need to get home. I left work a made it from Irvine, California to Santa Ana, California in 7 minutes. This drive usually takes 20 minutes due to traffic volume. When I got home, we rushed Jessica to Saddleback Hospital and she was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. After several tests which included a spinal tap, the doctor informed us that Jessica has Spinal Meningitis Beta Strep. She was immediately hooked up life supporting devices such as a ventilator, monitors and tubes that seem to go everywhere. Jeanette and I were scared out of our minds. We stayed at the hospital for several days, and then the doctors told us that it will be a long battle and we should go home and try to get some sleep.

A couple of weeks went by and Jessica was still unresponsive. Jeanette and I decided to go to church and talk to our priest and ask him to come to the hospital, bless and pray for her. After the priest left, I heard Jeanette say softly asking God if it is his will, then take her but please don’t let Jessica suffer. For some reason, we both left the hospital that night with a feeling that things are in God’s hands and everything will be alright.

When we got home that night, we were getting ready for bed and the light was off in all the rooms. I looked over a saw a bright light shining in the hallway but it wasn’t artificial light caused by a light bulb and there were no windows that moonlight could peer into. My wife didn’t notice the light but I felt comforted and knew that is was my Lord and Savior. It was the best night sleep I had since before my daughter was admitted to the hospital.

The next morning came and we quickly got ourselves ready to go to the hospital. On the way to the hospital, I turned to Jeanette and said that I firmly believe that God is going to pull Jessica through this.  Later that day, Jeanette had the first opportunity to hold Jessica and she closed her eyes and prayed. We she opened her eyes, she saw Jessica open her eyes for the first time since being admitted.

She slowly started improving and after 31 days in the hospital, we were able to bring Jessica home. At that time, we didn’t know what path God had planned for us and Jessica but we were more than eager to follow him.
