The trinity is one of the least understood characteristics of the Christian God. There is only one God, but He exists in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
The fellowship of the trinity is first introduced at creation. Genesis 1:26 says “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image.” It is a hard concept to wrap our minds around, that the three persons who make up the one God talk amongst themselves and work together to create the physical universe.
When one member of the trinity was sent to enter our time and space, we got an idea of how God could be three in one. Jesus went to his cousin John the Baptist to be baptized. At that moment we are given a glimpse of the trinity gathered together: God the Father spoke from heaven saying “This is my beloved son, in Him I am well pleased.” God the Son was present in human flesh, and God the Holy Spirit descended from heaven in the form of a dove.
But 3 or 4 years later, there was a moment when the unity of the Trinity was broken. Jesus was hanging on the cross, taking the penalty for the sin of all mankind. Jesus cried out: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” For the first time in eternity, God the Son was separated from God the Father. Why did this have to happen?
As Adam and Eve found out after they chose death instead of life – this was not an immediate physical death. It was a spiritual death of separation from the fellowship with God.
Jesus had to endure this separation from God as part of the punishment for sin. The prophet Isaiah predicted this: “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
Good News – the Trinity has been reunited! The next thing Jesus said from the cross was “It is finished.” The penalty was paid. And more good news: we can also be united with the trinity. Sin separates us from God, but we can be reunited with our creator by accepting Christ’s sacrifice to pay the price for our sin. We can be forgiven of our iniquities (sins), and experience the peace and healing because Jesus paid our way.
