The End Is Nigh! 1,000 Years of Predictions
For centuries there have been innumerable theories as to when and how the world might end. Possibilities put forward have ranged from nuclear war to destruction by a giant meteor-and even invasion from outer space. Some believers predict the coming of a Messiah, at which time all but they will be annihilated.
Here are some highlights gleaned from prophecies spanning a millennium.
992 In 960 Bernard of Thuringia, a German theologian, calculated 992 as the most likely year. As the time approached; panic was widespread.
1000 It has been said that the coming of the year 1000(the “thousand years” referred to in the Book of Revelation) was greeted with alarm, and that many people immigrated to Jerusalem in anticipation of a holocaust that never came. Recent research, however, suggests that the scale of the panic, if existed at all, was greatly exaggerated.
1410 It was once believed that the world was created in 5590 B.C and would last 7,000 years; therefore, its date of destruction would be 1410. The significance of this date was not noticed until 1645, however.
1524; 1588 German astrologer Johann Stoffler predicted an overwhelming flood on February 20, 1524. Believers promptly started constructing arks; one man is said to have been trampled to death by a mob attempting to board his specially built vessel. When nothing happened, the calculations were revised and a new date given: 1588. That year also passed without any unusual rainfall, although it did see the Spanish Armada-a some-what different watery phenomenon.

1665 Solomon Eccles was jailed in London’s Birdwell Prison in 1665 for striding through Smithfield Market stark naked, carrying a pan of blazing sulfur on his head, and prophesying doom and destruction. Although the end of the world did not follow, the Great Fire of London did, in 1666.
1761 When two minor earthquakes were felt in London 28 days apart, former soldier William Bell predicted that a third would take place 28 days after the second, on April 5. So powerful would it be, he declared, that the world undoubtedly end-or perhaps be consumed in a flood. Reportedly people left London in great numbers, some taking to boats. Not even the slightest tremor was felt.
1882; 1911; 1928; 1936; 1953 Basing his calculation on measurements of the Great Pyramid, Scotland reckoned that the world end in either 1882 or 1911. In the 1924 edition of their book The Great Pyramid: Its Divine Message, pyramidologists David Davidson and Herbert Alder smith corrected the date to May 29, 1928. In 1953. Another pyramidologist, George F. Riffert, who had established the crucial date as September 6, 1936, later explained that it was the abdication of Edward VIII that he Great Pyramid was revealing, not the end of the world.
1914 After studying the mystical messages of the Great Pyramid, in 1874 Charles Taze Russell, founder of the sect that became Jehovah’s Witnesses, concluded that the Second Coming had already taken place. He declared that people had 40 years, or until 1914, to enter his faith or be destroyed. Later he modified the date to “very soon after 1914.”
1919 Albert Porta, a newspaper weatherman was noted for the accuracy of his predictions of earthquakes in San Francisco. Therefore he was taken very seriously when he claimed that on December 17, 1919, flaming gases from the sun would consume the earth. When the sun continued shining, Port resumed his weather forecasting.
1967 Anders Jensen, the Danish leader of a sect known as the Disciples of Orthon, convinced his followers that the world would end in a nuclear holocaust on Christmas Day, 1967. Jensen even appeared on the David Frost Show to announce this fact to millions of television viewers. After spending Christmas in their underground bunker, Jensen and 50 disciples emerged.
1972 Herbert W. Armstrong, publisher of the magazine the publisher of the magazine the plain Truth, declared that January 7, 1972 was undoubtedly the date to watch the utter failure of his prediction has not diminished his zeal.
Toward the Millennium Based on complicated cabalistic calculations, some have offered 1997 as the “definite” year. The number arrived at after multiplying 666 by 3-both of which have magical connotations-is 1998, which has also been predicted. Moreover, Christ is said to have been crucified in the 1,998th week of His life.
However, the 16th century seer Nostradamus is said to have favored 1999-the year of a Martian invasion-while an 18th century French prophetess, Jeanne Le Roger, established the year 2000 as the definitive one.
Since the predictions of the past have been notably inaccurate, most people take these with a small grain of salt. Unless…

Very interesting Mr G. I’m making my own prediction…2012 will come and go just like all the other predictions have.
I thought it had already happened and we are all just part of dark matter aimlessly floating around the universe.
