The Four Gospels

There are four gospels in the Bible of the New Testament. They are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each of these gospel writers wrote about Jesus.

They wrote about his life and ministry. There are symbols for these four gospels. According to some study Bibles, the symbol for Matthew is the lion. The lion represents strength and authority. The bull symbolizes Mark. The bull represents service and power. A figure of a man symbolizes Luke which stands for wisdom and character; and an eagle is John’s symbol representing deity.

When you read Matthew, notice that he always used the key expression “that it might be fulfilled.” He seems to quote from the Old Testament to show that Jesus was the promised Messiah of the Old Testament prophecy. Matthew 21:4 said, “All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, (5) Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold , thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.”

Mark’s key expression is “immediately.” Mark 6:50 said, “And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.”

Luke’s key expression is “it happened” or “it came to pass.” Luke 2:15 said, “And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.”

John’s key expression is “believe.” John 20:31 said, “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”

Each Gospel writer seemed to have written about Jesus for a different purpose. Together, the four Gospels teaches us who Jesus Christ is. To me, they are one.
