The Heart of the Gospel

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-16.

What a great plan!  Forgiveness is God’s plan of Salvation.  Our understanding and experience of salvation is limited only by our acceptance and extension of forgiveness.

It’s so hard to wrap our thoughts around this idea God has implemented in Jesus, yet it is the very heart and soul of the entire Gospel.  Only by accepting forgiveness do we have access to the Throne of Grace and Mercy.  Only by extending forgiveness are we empowered to love as we have been loved.

The Bible points us to this divine concept, demonstrated by Jesus and woven into the sacramental, theological and confessional practice of the Church throughout the ages.

God’s plan continues to anger many who would otherwise consider themselves faithful disciples of Jesus.  God’s plan continues to baffle many who construct (in vain) alternate formulas for salvation.  Yet, God’s plan continues to stand, and to work, and to save, and to heal, and to reconcile, and to transform the lives of individuals, families and communities.
