Recently the phenomenon of televangelism has given me a considerable terror as to the condition of Christianity. To be sure I am not a devout Christian and have read the gospels of Luke and Mathew, and other books throughout the bible but certainly not the whole book. However I am not illiterate. It seems the assumption of these men that I am.
Television to be sure is not the correct medium for religion of any kind. It is not that it is impossible to have true religious experience on television (it is extremely difficult in any case) but to do so would in fact go against the aesthetic aspects of television.
Today’s Televangelists believe that they have done an honorable and courageous thing in bringing religion to so many. Their intentions have become cult like, and in bringing religion to so many, they are so spiritually shallow, that they don’t even recognize that they have completely changed the word of god for their own meaning. They have not god’s intentions in mind, but there own, and they pluck passages from the bible to protect their sin.
I watched a sermon from Creflo Dollar the other day and I felt he could have been my financial advisor. I was confused; does not the book say money is the root of all evil? Did not Jesus scold those merchants who sold products in the holy vicinity of the church? Did not Jesus tell us that the meek will inherit the earth?
The issue is that television in fact turns these men into gods. They become blasphemous, and accept no master, no matter how much they claim to be god fearing. They concern themselves with vain trivial matters such as abortion and gay marriage, yet have no problem turning a cold shoulder to the homeless man in the street, as Creflo Dollar described doing to a beggar, quite vividly in his sermon.
These men (and women) in fact seem to believe that it is merely good enough to claim to worship god and Jesus. The book does not tell these men how to live, as it should, rather they use it to justify how they live. They seem to believe that by bringing more supporters into their cult, they are bringing more, closer to god when in fact they are defiling and destroying the Bibles meaning in the process.
These blind men creep, climb, and crawl into power motivated by the vanity of their natural human impulse of conspicuousness. Indeed that seems to be the motivation of education in all aspects today. Advancement in life or the knowledge that one made it; by made it we mean not merely that we have made money, but that we have the means to make money, the means to be recognized. These televangelists are not pious god-fearing people but celebrities who will joke about god and other such things that are supposedly sacred, when it will gather them attention on TV shows or other major broadcasts. These men are merely actors playing the spirited preacher in their theatre.
Creflo Dollar and many others of these televangelists have multimillion-dollar homes, private jets, and Rolls Royce cars, all paid for by donations to the church. You need not be a Christian or a biblical scholar to know that this is not Christianity in any way, in fact it is anti-Christianity. It is the opposite what Jesus taught, it is devilish.
I can tell you with certainty that these men have not read the bible; they think they have but they have not. Reading is an art in and of itself; the bible is one of the greatest books of all time weather one is religious or not. When one reads they must go at the words like a miner goes at rock in search for his treasures. There are plenty of treasures in the bible but one must look up every word that is unfamiliar; abandon one’s interests and entrench oneself in the world of the author. We cannot bring our own meaning to reading any great authors work, and if we do so it is one of the tragedies of our education system and our culture; we are so narcissistic as to not even be able to read. These televangelists are truly illiterate in that they have so incredibly misread the most famous book in history.
They may find passages and take them from context of the bible and use the book to support their disgusting covetousness, and desire to fulfill their human thirst of recognition, however any one who has read at least one of the gospels of the Old Testament, and I mean truly read can know what a sad joke these people are. It is a joke because we laugh in self-defense.
It is quite a baffling development that one of the greatest books of all time has been so un-read by the very people who claim to live by it. The bible has justified many tyrants actions in history, however never before have our priests and preachers actually tried to tell us that its meaning is the opposite of what it actually means. That the bibles meaning could be construed as justifying avarice, has truly never been seen and it is a testament to how blind we are that a single person follows. Many follow because they like the message and it justifies the feeling of avarice that they already feel in our society, except in god’s eyes so they believe. Well according to the book, all of the televangelists who preach the prosperity gospel are in fact dragging Christianity down to new depths than ever before seen in history.
