The prayer of Jesus is so different from most of ours. John wrote in chapter 17 of the gospel how Jesus prayed for us in what we call the “Our Father,” and how he wanted the Father to open our hearts to understand what he has done for us. His prayer is so lacking in selfishness. He looked for things that will help us to get to heaven.
We, on the other hand are so caught up in how things affect us. We pray for what we think will make us happy instead of how we can be alert to God. We have our lists of wants and forget that God knows much better than we do what will make us happy and what will settle our souls.
How different life could be if we remained aware of this and understand that when we come to God and start to share in his life, we aren’t to keep it to ourselves, but to look for opportunities to share what we have in his goodness and grace so that he may be glorified. It shouldn’t be all about us. If our lives can begin to show who God is, the important things in life will fall into line. When we begin to live the beatitudes that Jesus taught, others who believe in him will be drawn to us and we will be able to share the blessings of love and care that are the glorifying keynotes of the life of Jesus.
The Prayer Jesus Prayed
When the Apostles asked Jesus how to pray, The "Our Father" is what he taught them.
