The Book of Second Thessalonians makes clear that the followers of Jesus Christ would face persecutions and tribulations from an unbelieving world, but they must endure and put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ who was the first among the brethren to endure persecution and tribulation from those that opposed him. The Apostle Paul used this letter to encourage the believers in Thessalonians to endure it, not as one who does not believe in the grace and the power of our Lord Jesus Christ but as believers and followers of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus is our ensample as how to treat others and how to handle every situation that we find ourselves in. The Thessalonians were not instructed to lash out against their aggressors out of a hateful heart, but to love and to pray for their aggressors out of a loving heart. For vengeance isn’t ours to minister. In the Day of the LORD, the LORD JESUS CHRIST himself will execute all vengeance with fire and recompense that vengeance upon all who did not believe in GOD and did not obey the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 1:4-10
4 “So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:
5 Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:
6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.”
Also, in 2 Thessalonians chapter 3, the Apostle Paul being filled with the Holy Spirit went on to both instruct and admonish the followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, as how we are to continue to work to earn our own bread or not eat if we have chosen not to work at all. Furthermore, the Apostle Paul instructs us all to separate ourselves from among those brothers that have chosen not to work at all, so that they have something to eat and not having to depend on others to have bread to eat; especially if they are able to work for their own bread. We are not to count these brothers among our enemies, but we are to not keep company with them, so that they will be ashamed and hopefully have a change of heart and start doing that thing which is expected of him as a follower of Jesus Christ.
This does not mean that we are to stop being charitable toward those who are in need. No, it just means that we are not to give a man an accuse to feel that they do not need to work especially if they are able to work to take care of his needs or his family’s needs. There are times when finding work is difficult and in these times is when being charitable is most needed and when it serves best to glorify the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY. A man who really doesn’t need charity because he can work will not be genuinely grateful to the LORD for what he has received. A man who is able to work but is unable to find work because of hard economic times will be both genuinely grateful to the LORD JESUS CHRIST for providing what he needs when he needed it the most and will work that much harder to secure work in the future.
This is just a couple of valuable lessons which the LORD Jesus Christ is teaching us all today through the Holy Spirit and by the hand of the Apostle Paul in the Book of Second Thessalonians. As with every book in the Holy Bible there are more than one or two lessons being taught and even with an eternity with the LORD Jesus Christ awaiting those of us who believe in Him, the Truth, the lessons being taught in the WORD OF GOD we will be learning still throughout all of eternity, which is forever and ever.
