The Lenten season for Christians begins on Ash Wednesday and goes through Easter Sunday. It is highly recommended that a person practices self denial during this holy season Here are some hints of things to do to make the Lenten season more meaningful.
For young children, simple acts of self denial can be practiced. This means not eating candy, not watching their favorite program, or sharing something with their siblings.
For older children, the acts become more complex. Game consoles, favorite television shows, and music are some forms of self denial. Fasting from a particular food and not eating between meals is another suggestion. Quiet time spent in reading a religious book is another suggestion. As one gets older, the acts of self denial become more personal. Abstain from using the phone for one night per week. Stay off the computer for one night per week.
Young adults can fast, also. They can abstain from movies on television and the theater. Their home time could be spent in reading religious material and spending more time with the family. Giving up a game or two of golf is another suggestion for the Lenten season.
Catholics abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. This is a requirement for all Fridays of Lent. Catholics could increase their religious life by attending church more often. They can attend a weekly Stations of the Cross, where as pilgrims, they walk the Way of the Cross in prayer with Jesus in word and song. More visits to church to pray are also means of observing the Lenten season.
The season of Lent is a preparation for the joyous Resurrection of Christ. To make the season more meaningful, it is important to sacrifice and prepare for the joyous Easter morning.
