But that is exactly it–a level of protection. I would imagine there were some misinformed people thinking that potassium iodide (KI) was a cure-all, when it was never meant to be.
What it mainly does is to protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine. It will not protect a person from any other type of radiation, nor will it protect any other part of the body from radioactive iodine. Neither can this substance reverse the effects of any radioactive injury.
Despite the ample information available on KI, I am sure some people missed it, or based their hopes on street knowledge, and assumed the chemical was a panacea for all radioactive threats.
The same thing happens in the spiritual realm, but, worse than physical death, its consequences mean eternal damnation. The world has many ideas of how to take care of undesirable behavior, addictions, sorrows and more. While there are some things that work for certain cases, there is only one cure for the root of problems.
The root is our sinful nature. Some do not think we have one, but God says we do (Romans 6:6) and we all fall short when compared to Him (Romans 3:23). Here, I do not mean any of His exclusive attributes like omnipotence or omniscience, but I mean the moral attributes of God. While probably any human has some of the moral attributes of God, not a one of us has all the attributes in ourselves and the ones we do have do not measure up to the level and quality required by Him.
To cure this, veiling Himself in flesh in historical time Jesus Christ lived the life each of us is to live, rejecting temptation and lovingly obeying the heavenly Father directed by the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 2:10). With this accomplished, He took our sin (Hebrews 9:28) and sin nature (Romans 8:3) and suffered the shame of the cross (Hebrews 12:2) where the sin was punished and the sinful nature destroyed.
This is a powerful Cure that has changed the lives of many, including my own and my parents’. Unlike many earthly cures, if we accept it and apply it, it affects our entire being, body, soul and spirit (1Thessalonians 5:23): “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
But there was the key: We need to accept it and apply it. Surrender would be a far better word than accept. It would be something like if you had a dreaded terminal illness that there was only one cure for. Despite other methods you would prefer, you would have to surrender to that one way. This is exactly the case in the spiritual realm. There is only One Way (Acts 2:4), God’s Way (Amos 7:7-8), which is Christ Himself (John 4:6).
