Verses about love in the scriptures

Throughout the bible, love is mentioned. Love is what moulds the character of the Christian. Love binds man to God. Love is eternal. Love never fails. It is a bridge that brings people together. Love is the reason why we have salvation in Jesus name. Love is the reason why Christ died for us. The bible contains verses about love to guide us in every situation.

The greatest commandment that God gave to man is found in Deuteronomy 6:5. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your strength and with all your mind”. Jesus repeated this in the book of Matthew 22:37-38 when the Pharisees asked a question to test him.

Because of love, God gave us Jesus. In John 3:16, it says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”. This is one of the most quoted references of God’s love.

The portion of scripture commonly referred to as the love chapter (1 Corinthians 13) is a lesson on what love is. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking…” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). This chapter also speaks on the purity of love. In verses 6-8 it says, “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth”. Love is strong. “It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails… “

The bible gives us many verses on the beauty of love.”A loving doe, a graceful dear may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love”, (Proverbs 5:19). “There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky…and the way of a man with a young woman” (Proverbs 30:18-19).

The Song of Solomon is a romantic love song. “How delightful is your love…my bride…” (Song of Solomon 4:10). “…I am faint with love.” (Song of solomon2:5). “My beloved is mine and I am his…” (Song of Solomon 2:16). In chapter 8 verses 6-7 it says, “…for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love”.

No matter what the context of love, the Bible has a verse for it. The Proverbs contain verses on instructive love. “Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers all wrongs” (Proverbs 10:12). It goes on to say, “Whoever would foster love covers an offense…” (Proverbs 19:9), and “A friend loves at all times…” (Proverbs 17:17).

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love”. (1 John 4: 7-8).

The bible gives us instructions on love.“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”, (Ephesians 5:25). “Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience…And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity”. (Colossians 3:12-14).

Jeremiah 31:3 says, ‘“The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness”’. Deuteronomy 7:9 says: “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
