The picture above depicts a comic book figure. A woman warrior battling evil forces. The picture is an illustration. I want all to understand and know that there was a woman in the Bible, who was a warrior as well as a judge and leader over Israel. I want all people to see her as a fighter. In fact, there were two woman warriors.
I wrote this article especially for Erin Miller. Erin Miller writes for Triond dot com, she’s also an artist and does wonderful illustrations of woman warriors and female super heroes. When she was a young girl, a Sunday school teacher made the mistake of telling her that woman were weak. The word of God tells us something quite different.
Read on, as I bust up some lies and myths about Godly women of the Bible, using the sword of the spirit. The sword of the spirit is the word of God.
Deborah, warrior woman of God and leader of Isreal was more than a stay at home mom
I want all to understand that Deborah, was a warrior woman of God. She was was more than a stay at home mom, she was more than a beauty queen, she was more than a woman sitting silent in the back of a church. She was a kingdom ruler. Deborah was a war strategist. She planned how to win wars. She wanted God’s enemies dead. She had the blood of evil men on her hands and she led Israel into battle and victory.
It is blessing to be a stay at home mom. Stay at home moms are a blessing to their family. Stay at home moms do everything from changing diapers to running a business. It’s a blessing to be a beauty queen like Ester, whose beauty saved the people of God. It’s a blessing to be a woman period. What I’m saying is that woman had other positions which God also placed them in. None being any better than the other.
The only people who might restrict Godly woman are those in the church or the world
A woman can do mighty works. God places no limitations on woman but that they be holy, Godly and follow His commandments. A woman must remain open to whatever God calls her to. Let her be sure of that calling through prayer. Let the word of God be the guide. The only people who restrict woman are others in church or in the world.
Unfortunately, the church sometimes paints a picture of Godly women that is an outright lie. The church often paints the picture that a woman’s place is in the home. When in reality, a woman’s place is where ever God himself has placed her.
God placed this woman named Deborah, in Israel, as a leader and judge over all of Israel. Now she had to have a warlike spirit and she had to be a fighter. She was hungry for the blood of Israels enemies. She had to have had this type of character. She must have been aggressive and warlike. How could she have been anything else?
Here is what the word of God said about Deborah, leader and warrior woman of God:
Judges 4:4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
This is a short verse. If you nod you’ll miss it. Read it again and again. Deborah a woman judged Israel at the time spoken of, in this chapter. Judges were as Kings in those days. She was not like Judge Judy, her position was that of a King.
Deborah was a judge and leader for 40 years. After she and her Israelite army won the battle with the Canaanites, Debra wrote a victory song, found in Judges 5:1-31. It was a very long song. In parts of her song she describes her position and power, she also gives the time period of her reign. Let’s look at Judges 5:7:
Judges 5:7 (Deborah singing) The inhabitants of the village ceased, they ceased in Israel, until I DEBORAH AROSE A MOTHER OF ISRAEL.
In the last verse of DEBORAH’S SONG OF VICTORY OVER THE CANAANITES she says:
Judges 5:31 (Deborah sings) So let all thine enemies perish, O Lord: but let them love him as be as the sun when he goeth forth in the night. And the LAND HAD REST FOR FORTY YEARS.
The land had rest 40 years under Deborah’s leadership.
Deborah had a general named Barak, the word of God clearly states she went with him to battle. and the scripture clearly states that the battle would be won by a woman. God’s prophesy to Deborah, was that the battle would be won by a woman. Let’s look at Judges 4:9 in part:
Judges 4:9 (Deborah speaks) And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding THE JOURNEY THAT THOU TAKETH SHALL NOT BE TO THINE HONOR; for the LORD shall sell Siseria into THE HAND OF A WOMAN.
Deborah went on into the battle. She devised the strategy that they would strike in rainy season. The Canaanites were mighty, had chariots and wore armor. Deborah knew her army, God’s army of Israelites were not as fierce and were fighting with swords and no armor or chariots. The rain stopped the Canaanites and Israel defeated them. They won, Deborah’s war strategies worked. The rain made the battlefield muddy.
And it was Jael, the second warrior woman for God, who finished it off, by driving a stake through the Canaanite generals head. She lured him into her tent , fed him and finished him off while he slept. She drove that stake straight through his head and he fell dead. Jael used a hammer to drive the stake in. Judges 5:21 tells the end tail of the story:
Judges 5:21 Then JAEL, Heber’s WIFE took a NAIL and HAMMER in her hand, and went softly unto him (the Caananite general), and SMOTE the NAIL INTO his TEMPLES, and FASTENED it to THE GROUND.
In the above quote Jael, a woman, and a warrior of God’s army, took a stake and hammered it into the head of the enemy. Plus, she hammered his bloody head into the ground. Jael was lauded as a heroine for her brave and mighty acts.
The story of Deborah and Jael is in the Bible. It does take a careful reading. It’s easy to miss, but it is in the Bible in plain black and white. I must say, I missed it for a while. The story slipped by me and I was busy believing the lie that women are weak. As time went on, I became more serious. I began reading books of the Bible over and over again. I struggled with being called into ministry.
Finally after years of careful study, I applied for my ministry license, ordination and received it. It’s unfortunate that this had to be a struggle. But God’s plan always wins out in the end regardless. To this very day some women are barred from leadership and ministry.
Some women are hindered by the restraints the church may put upon them. This is sinful and should not be so. We are all made free in Christ and to keep women in the bondage of a lie, is a grave sin. The truth must be told for there is freedom for women and everyone else in truth.
Let us look at God’s truth for God’s truth is freedom and deliverance. God’s truth is the truth from He, the almighty creator. Let’s not make God a liar. There were ministry leaders in the New Testament. Some still insist their were not. These people are liars. And like the devil, love to keep anyone they can in chains. Women in the New Testament gave more than money, some were church leaders.
Anyone who tries to prevent women from being Pastors is calling God a liar. Any man or woman who would like to know of these women, should read the new Testament about Anquilla and Phoebe and that’s another article. Plus, it’s always best that these doubters about women in ministry or leadership, find out for themselves.
Deborah was appointed by God to lead and had the respect of the whole nation of Israel
Deborah was elected by God to lead. The whole nation of Israel regarded her with respect and obeyed her rulings. She had a warlike spirit and she was a fighter. She was involved with swords and weapons. She absolutely had to have these qualities or she could not have done the job God called her to.
Deborah was no shrinking violet
She could not have been a shrinking violet. She absolutely was not a woman doing her nails and serving tea. There is grace and beauty in being the hostess but Deborah was a warrior as described by the word of God. She was married so she had a role as wife as well. She was a family woman and ruler. She was married and had a husband. His name was Lapidoth
Deborah was concerned with fighting, weaponry and drawing the blood of enemies
Deborah was a leader, prophetess and a warrior. There was one other brave and warrior like woman of God, her name was Jael. They both were involved with Israels war with the Canaanites. Now the word of God very clearly describes Deborah as a leader of the Israelites. She was a woman who planned how a war would be won. How are we to kill and wipe out the enemy, these were Deborah’s thoughts. How shall my army drain every drop of the blood from the enemy and slay them proper, these were Deborah’s thoughts.
Wars were fought over and over in the Bible. God’s people had to fight and slay those who attacked them. They were not like sheep in this sense. They fought to control territory. They fought so they might continue to worship Jehovah God and retain their freedoms.
Deborah devised strategy that won the war with the Canaanites
The word of God clearly describes Deborah as a war strategist. She planned strategy to fight against the enemy of Gods people. Jael killed the Canaanite general, she drove a tent peg into his head. The war Deborah was credited with winning was against the powerful Canaanites. This Godly, warrior woman Jael, took force, and aggression and drove a stake, right through the enemies head. While he slept.
Jael was no shrinking violet either
This woman Jael also had the fighting spirit and was commended as a heroine for her bravery. Jael was no shrinking violet either. She was brave and fearless. She tricked the Canaanite general and took him into her tent promising to feed him. After he ate, Jael patiently waited until he was asleep, then she drove a tent peg right through his skull. He fell dead.
This was the warrior woman Jael. I don’t think she flinched one bit. Remember she hammered this man head into the ground. Can you imagine the blood that was pouring out?
There you have it. Warrior woman of the Bible. If you go back and read the story carefully, you’ll get the details. So far, I’m sure you can see that God empowers women anyway he chooses. Women are just as strong as God makes them. On the same note, men are just as strong as God makes them. And in conclusion there were warrior women of God in the Bible who were in the family of God. A woman’s place is doing whatever God called her to do.
So if your little daughter (or son) ever asks you about a woman’s place, you now know exactly what to tell them.
