What Does It Mean to be a Christian

An account of what it really means to be an active Christian – the way that Christian faith says we should live.

Christianity is not a religion; it is a relationship with God and a way of life. It is not about amassing lots of knowledge but about believing in God and in his Son, the risen Christ. You will see more results by learning one passage and acting on it than from learning the whole Bible and just carrying on living as you please. That is not to say that life as a Christian does not please you! There is no-one more powerful than God, so it’s a good idea to be on his side!

The first of the Ten Commandments tells us there is only one God.

Exodus20:3′ states  ’Thou shalt have no other gods before me’.

Our God is the creator of the entire universe (Genesis 1) and the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. God is all powerful, and all knowing. Therefore we do not need any other Gods or anything else to worship

There are religions that say there are multiple Gods or that worship things or people other than God. However this it not what the bible tells us Saints, Mary, Jesus, Idols etc, are not God. Only God is God, and to worship anything else is idolatry (putting something else in the place of God) which is wrong.

The bible is the word of God. God doesn’t have hands so he needed someone to write it down for him, but he is the author. He inspired holy men to writh the scriptures.

It is important that we understand the Bible correctly; we study it to “rightly divide”, and properly understand it. Originally, it was written in Hebrew and Greek, so sometimes the English translation is not totally accurate. We can look at the original words used to improve our understanding.

2 Timothy 2:15 says “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”

A genuine Christian teacher will always be able to back up what they say from the word of God (i.e. the Bible)

Jesus Christ is the risen and living Son of God. Jesus is not God, as some religions teach; he is the Son of God. If you don’t agree, just think for a moment. If he is God then who rose him from the dead? Did God die? God is God. Jesus is his Son. Simple.

When Jesus was baptized, the voice of God came to tell us who this man is.

Matthew 3:17 records this ; ‘And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased’.

Jesus knew he was going to die and he could have chosen to prevent it. He had all the power of God at his disposal. But he knew what he had to do. He went willingly into a traumatic and painful death in order to become the sacrifice for our sins. Like the sacrificial lamb in Old Testament times, his blood cleansed us from sin.

We pray because we know that God will hear abd answe our prayers. Jesus promised that if we ask God in his name, he will make sure it gets done

We need to have faith that our prayer will be answered

Christ gave us the “lord”s prayer’ as an example

Our Father which art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name.

 Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.

Amen

As this is a translation it won’t be the exact words that Jesus used, so we do not have to quote it parrot-fashion. Besides the important thing about prayer is to mean what you are saying. You can talk to God in your own words.

Satan, The Devil, The adversary, or whatever you choose to call him most definitely exists and he is the one who is responsible (often with help form mankind) for all the bad stuff in the world.

When Man was created in the Garden of Eden, man was given dominion over the world, but gave this over to Satan by disobeying God.

Satan attempts to cause havoc wherever he can

When we die, we die. We do not go floating off into the blue sky to sit on a cloud and play a harp. We do not wander around the world as a ghost or an angel. (Angels are God’s messengers and are a totally separate thing). Those who die do not have to hang around waiting for their relatives to join them. They are dead.

When Christ returns then the dead in Christ shall arise first. This is when we get our eternal life, and we all get it at the same time.

God wants us to tell other people about him.

Tell someone and you might just be leading them to eternal life. Yes, they might reject it; they might laugh at you or even be a bit mean. But so what? There are people who will disagree with you or scoff whatever you do and believe in. But there is nothing else where the stakes are so high – eternal life, on offer, right now.
