Where is the Compassion in the Churches?

It seems that compassion in the church is lacking.

It seems that as over the years, the compassion that the church once showed people, has dwindled. It appears that more and more churches are helping people less and less.

Recently, I left a very volatile living situation and left my home with my dog. I showed up at this church that knew me and they said I could stay there in my motor home but could I help them monetarily as they were struggling to pay their bills. I said I could and at the time a younger woman was living with me and she was working. She decided to quit work and live off my disability. Needless to say, this didn’t last long and out the door she went. When you’re on a very meager income, it’s hard enough to support yourself lest anyone else especially when they say they’ll help with the finances.

After she moved out, I approached the pastor and told him that I really couldn’t afford the money I was paying him. It came to half of my disability check and by the time I paid for what I needed every month in the way of food, propane, dog food and medication, I only had $3.00 left at the end of the month. I couldn’t replace the tennis shoes that I was wearing that left my feet blistered and bloody, I couldn’t afford to even buy a warm, winter coat, or under garments. What was his reply when I asked him if I could pay the church less money? He just looked at me and said, “Maybe you’ll get a writing job.” Left me floored. After that, he didn’t have time for me but he had time for other people. Then when my former husband came looking for me, it was time to go as I was no longer safe at that church.

I called some friends and they said that their church was a very good church. I was hesitant but I decided to give it a try. This church has very loving people and the pastor knows what it’s like to not have compassion shown towards him or his wife. He knows what it’s like to have people hunt you down like a dog for whatever reason.

I have found that this is one of the few churches that really do care about people and helping them; instead of seeing what they can get out of someone when they show them some kindness.

Compassion needs to make a comeback in a lot of churches – is yours going to be next?
