The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberscpace is the new plan Obama’s administration has been working on and is slated to be released in the next few months. Already political and private groups are calling it a national ID agenda cloaked in disguise and managed under Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. Religious groups are already murmuring about it being the mark of the beast as mentioned in the Bible and that Obama is some type of anti-Christ.
Commerce Secretary Gary Locke re-assured all parties ‘We are not talking about a government controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing on-line security and privacy …’ No details have been finalized as of yet and the clamoring for clarification is well underway. When ask about these new digital ID’s White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt says people shouldn’t be concerned to much as anonymity will still be “possible” while using the Internet. ‘I don’t have to get a credential if I don’t want to,’ he says. The credentials or digital ID’s could be in the form of a digital certificate or smart card, either way the intention is that these identities would be used during on-line purchases by consumers for financial transactions, which implies that without an ID a person cannot buy on-line and later maybe not buy offline.
No wonder Christian groups have become unnerved claiming it’s the mark of the beast. So according to Mr. Schmidt, a person doesn’t have to get a digital certificate or credential if they don’t want one, but that person would be unable to buy on-line, doesn’t seem like much of a free choice to many as most people purchase on-line now. The main concern for many Americans are that the new digital ID will become mandatory for all Americans, and the effect it will have on the way people purchase and surf the Internet with anonymity. Is the new Internet ID the mark of the beast? I guess only God knows and time will tell.
