Who Was the Most Responsible Person for the Death of Jesus?

Who actually did kill Jesus? Pilate? Roman’s soldiers? Herod? Caiaphas? You and me?

It was not an ultimate thing to do. It was a choice. Indeed it has been God’s plan to save the believers through the death of His Son. But as a human being, the son, Jesus Christ had a free will. Jesus was on a mission from God. However He had chance to delay His execution. He had power to avoid the crucifixion. He had an authority to order people including government and angels. He was not an ordinary man. He was God Himself.

He was on Gethsemane garden. He felt great fear. His soul was very sorrowful. He was in the great trouble. He went to a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, it was possible; the hour might pass from Him.  Three times He prayed, begging God to release Him from his fate. But He knew God’s will. “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done,” He said. His sweat was look like drops of blood. Under extreme stress our blood vessels can break and blood can leak into the sweat itself. The medical term call it as haematohydrosis (blood sweat). Jesus knew the torture and agonising death were lay ahead. This stress was unbearable, quite enough to cause him to sweat blood.

The crucifixion indeed is unbearable. Actor Jim Caviezel who played Jesus’ role in the film The Passion of Jesus Christ cried when the crew put the cross on his shoulder. The crews thought Jim was acting. Actually Jim was very shock. The cross was so heavy and rude. According to Jim, it is impossible an ordinary man can carry the cross. Jim couldn’t take the cross. He fell, almost unconscious because his shoulder was injured. Several times later the film crew change the cross with the smaller and lighter one and continue filming. I have not talked about the stripping, the crown of thorns, the nails on the cross and the mocking by Romans soldiers yet. How horrible.

Some days before, in the event of Holy Week, Jesus was acting out the prophecy of the Messiah, Israel’s true king, the anointed one to redeem Israel. His arrival in Jerusalem on a donkey was a fulfilment of prophecy.

After that Jesus went to the Temple and attacked on the commercial activity of the moneychangers. It was also a symbolic attack on the Temple itself and the authorities of the Temple most probably would sentence Jesus to be death because of His action.

The most logical thing for Jesus to do was leaving Jerusalem and hide. He had plenty of time to run. However He continued to put himself directly toward the path of danger. He stayed in Jerusalem, celebrated the Passover with his disciples and predicting his own death in the Last Supper.

By doing above three things leading up to His execution, evidences are enough to say that more than anyone else, the person responsible for the death of Jesus was Jesus himself. Jesus planned and did everything that He knew what the consequences would be. But Jesus was not guilty. He was a soldier who goes on a mission that is certain to lead to death. He was a brave man, not a guilty one. Jesus was faithful to his mission. Jesus obeyed His Father till the end of His life. He didn’t have to do that, yet He was willingly to do that. His love for you and me was the reason why He inclined to bleed and die in that cross. “I do,” said Jesus, “I do it for you.”

The first time that this story appeared to me was in the Passion of the Christ. I never really understood until I watched the movie. I know it sounds cliche, but I felt it more from watching more so than reading it in the Bible.

You’ve timed your story very well, so that it comes at the time when we should all be looking to the memorial of jesus death. Good story and you’ve done a good job writing it.

Great article. So true that Jesus took this death upon Himself, and could have stopped it if He chose to. Watching the Jesus movie and the Passion of the Christ really made me realize how much of a sacrifice Jesus made for us – not only the horrific pain, but the stripping of all human dignity. A timely message well told.
