Once upon a time the Goddess Parvati created a boy(Ganesha) out of the dirt on her body. She ordered him to guard the door while she was bathing. When Parvati’s husband, the Lord Shiva, was denied access to meet his wife by a stanger, he beheaded Ganesha. Parvati was in utter grief, so in order to soothe his wife, Shiva told his troops to obtain the head of the first sleeping animal facing north. They found an elephant and brought the head to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva attached the head to Ganesha, and restored his life. Lord Shiva appointed the boy as leader of his troops and said that all who go on a voyage or journey should pray to Ganesha for a blessing.
