This Jatakarma Samskara was more practiced in older times and with time, this ceremony is garnering the changes needed for comfort and interest. In the olden days, it used to be celebrated in this way
After a child is born, a ceremony called Jatakarma Samskara is held to welcome the new born baby into the world and into the house. The father of the baby puts a small amount of honey and ghee in the baby’s mouth(though it received flak in later time to feed a new born baby anything other than milk). After this, the name of Lord Krishna is said in the child’s ear.
After ten days of the birth of the child, Namakarana is organized. Namakarana is the ceremony organized to name the baby. The name is decided according to the Jatakaratna of the child depending on the time at which the child was born and depending on the position of the planets at that time. The child is neatly dressed in new clothes. The decided name of the child is whispered in his ear three times by his father and is written on the rice filled in a plate to symbolically announce it.
After the namakarana, in some places a rather funny act used to be held. Some things which symbolically represent different professions are placed before the child and his future profession is decided based on his pointing finger at any of those things.
After Namakarana, different acts are done with passing months of the child to notify different phases of his childhood. When he is around three weeks old, he is first taken out under the Sun followed by temple and finally the moon(one of Hindu gods) is shown. When the child gets initial teeth, he is given solid food. The food majorly given is rice with curd or milk. When the kid is one to three years old, his hair is cut and is given to god.
But as the times are changing and as the way of living is changing, this ceremony has also changed a lot. Now, most of the people who live rural lives don’t have the time to conduct these activities but in rural India, this ceremony is still evident but with few changes.
Now, Namakarana alone is considered and accepted as Jatakarma Samskara. People call relatives and neighbors to celebrate this ceremony and the child is named and is placed in the swing for the first time.
