Bhagamandala is a small pilgrim town, and the confluence of three rivers Cauvery, Kannike and Sujyoti(underground). A dip in the Triveni Sangama(confluencing point) is considered very auspicious. People after the bath offer puja at the Bhagandeshwara temple complex and then proceed to Talacauvery.
Godavari, Nashik
In Nashik a bath in the river Godavari is considered very sacred. Be it Lord Shiva`s worship during the Hindu calendar month of Shravan or Makar Sankranti thousands take holy dip here to cleanse their sins. After a dip people do darshan of Lord Shankara in the Kapaleshwar and Someshwar temples.
Cauvery, Mayiladuturai
Mayiladuturai a sacred pilgrim town in Nagapattinam district is located on the banks of River Cauvery. Thousands of pilgrims and devotees take a holy dip here and worship Lord Shiva at during the various festivals in the Tamil Calendar with the belief of attaining Moksha.
Saryu, Ayodhya
Ayodhya on the banks of ancient Saryu River is supposed to be the birth place of Lord Rama. Large number of people congregate here during festivals like Sawan Jhula Mela, Ram Navami, Nag panchami to take holy dips and absolve themselves of sins.
Sangam Allahabad
Allahabad is famous for the ‘Sangam’ the site for the holy confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Sarawasti. According to Puranas, it was at Triveni Sangam that drops of Nectar fell from the pitcher, held by the Gods. There is quite a spectacle during the solar eclipse or the Kumbh Mela held once in 12 years as it draws huge people desirous of purifying their souls to the waters here.
Ganga Ghats, Varanasi
Despite the not so clean waters of the Ganges, devotees thronged the various Ghats of Varnasi, the city of Lord Shiva for a holy dip. Be it daily ritual or any special festival, Varanasi is the place for all to purify themselves and attain liberation from the pangs of birth and death.
Ganga Sagar, Sagar Island
Ganga sagar is the end of the 2700 Km journey of Mother Ganga to get merged with the Bay of Bengal. Taking a dip here is of tremendous significance as it is believed it will purify all the accumulated sins. After the dip, people head for the Kapil Muni ashram. Makar Sankranti sees heavy rush.
Tapi, Surat
River Tapi flowing through the city of Surat is considered very sacred as Rama had taken a holy dip here to accord “moksha” to his father King Dashrath. A bath during the solar eclipse assumes significance as the Tapi River is said to have arisen from the sun. Tapi is known as Suryaputri and Surat, Suryanagri. So this celestial event is the coming together of father and daughter.
Kudala Sangama, Bagalkot
Kudala Sangama Sukshetra is located in Bagalkot District 15 km from the Almatti dam. It is a sacred confluence of two big rivers Krishna and Malaprabha. Devotees take holy dip at Kudalasangama and then as per tradition visit Kudalasangameshwara, Basavanna`s Aikyamantap and other shrines. It is an important pilgrimage center for people of Lingayat faith.
Har ki Pauri, Haridwar
Har ki pauri is one of the most sacred ghats in India. People coming to Haridwar take a holy dip here before initiating their worships and offerings. It is also called as Brahmakund. Besides the routine dip auspicious days in Hindu Calender sees thousands thronging the Ghats.
